I was wondering if anyone here has experience with growing camellias in zone 7 or colder? I just planted one, an Ackerman susanqua variety called pink icicle that I just happened to come across at Lowes during their fall clearance. I've done a little research and found some very pretty cold hardy varieties online. I now have images in my head of a nice little grove of camellias planted in the clearing in the woods just outside my home office window (I have so many images of future gardens in my head!). But before I go investing time and money in more plants, I'd love to hear from anyone with experience growing these.

Mulch it really good (and leave a couple inches of space around the trunk area) and it should do just fine for you. Everything I'm reading says the one you have is part of the winter series which is the hardiest of all of the camellias. If you aren't wanting to jump on others on clearance then watch this one over the winter and see how it does. If it survives and thrives then you know you can get more to plant.

Thanks, Amanda. I'll put some extra mulch on it before winter sets in. I just put it in the ground last week, so I've been keeping it watered. Hopefully it will make it through its first winter. Crossing Fingers!
