I am so far not a particular fan of locking threads. It smacks of censorship to me. Sometimes I want to add my two cents to a thread, only to find it has been closed to any further discussion. I find lively, and often divergent, discourse to be rather refreshing. Just sayin...

I agree. As a relatively new member, it's very off-putting. I feel like it's the end of a story that I didn't get to read.

I get a bit confused as to the criteria for locking threads. I suppose if they seem to be taking an angry or confrontational tone, that's not a positive thing, but it seems like it happens so rarely on this site. There have been a few that were locked for reasons that eluded me.

Generally if the person who started a thread asked to have it locked, I approve the proposal. Anybody can propose locking a thread by clicking on "Suggest a Change".

Never knew that. So the originating poster kind of 'owns' a thread? Interesting concept.

I have no problem if the person who started a thread wants to lock it. That's not ownership, it's (limited) control.

After all, anybody who wants to continue the conversation elsewhere is perfectly welcome to do so. Nobody's really shutting down the conversation when a thread is locked (if so, only in a relative and limited sense). Mainly they are asking for the conversation to continue elsewhere, if it is going to continue.

That said, I would hope threads are only locked for a good reason, not willy nilly, of course. It does sort of interrupt the flow. But I don't mind trusting the originator of a thread to make that decision wisely.

It's not about ownership. The originator of the thread can ask/request for the thread to be locked, but it is ultimately up to the owners of the site, Dave and Trish, to make the decision.

If the admins/owners of this fantastic site see that there is a good reason to keep the thread opened, it stayed open. I trust them to make the correct decisions every time!

Since it does seem to happen infrequently, perhaps a quick explanation could be added before the lock? A simple 'Locked at the request of original poster,' or 'Locked due to inappropriate content,' or whatever other reason a thread may become locked would be helpful to those who are following it. I agree with the member who likened a thread lock to closing a book before reading to the end.

When any member uses the 'Suggest a Change' option, it's just that...only a suggestion.
It is purely up to the owners of this great site to lock, delete or leave a thread opened. Just because someone suggests it, does not mean it will actually happen. It's not censorship; just a wise decision made by people who have been creating, nurturing and running websites for a long time. Don't know what others feel but I think the Whitinger family have been doing a bang-up job! Thumbs up

To lock a thread with no explanation is confusing to me. I am not criticizing the Whitingers and I acknowledge it is their website to run as they please. Just looking for illumination. How can one avoid future locks if one doesn't know why a thread was locked to begin with? Shrug.

Agree with Deb, would just like to see a brief explanation as to why a thread is locked. IMHO
Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.

Not sure why we need feel the need to know each and everything that happens. But you might try sending a TreeMail to the OP to inquire.

The OP did not request it, must have been the result of a suggestion.

I locked the sandbox thread myself earlier. One of the posts inside it got a few reports so I went looking, and didn't really like what I saw, so I locked the thread in hopes of discouraging that from continuing.

Why didn't I post a note saying I had done that? I sure didn't want to have anything to do with that thread! Sticking tongue out I locked it and ran away as fast as I could! Hilarious!

OK then. I guess I wasn't offended...or perhaps I was one of the offenders. Who knows. Again, all I can do is shrug.
