As I was skimming through the threads in this forum, I became confused, and concerned then about posting my own photos in the 'Share Your Photos' thread here in this forum:
The thread "Welcome to the photography forum!" in Photography forum

Guess I do not understand what your question is. Yes, you can post your pix in the Share thread. Gene

This forum is dedicated to the technical discussion of photography as it relates to gardening. It is not a gallery of photos but rather a place for helping each other become better photographers.

Then would you say that the purpose of this original *Forum* has changed?

Let me also note, to those who might read this *Thread*, that are not-so-savvy users, that although there are other users here named Dave, the above quoted Dave is the mega-Webmaster here at NGA.

And I have also become discouraged (though one must be patient with the photo contest going on), because photos that I posted for "technical discussion" to "become a better photographer", have not even been responded to. I'm not looking for a pat on the back here; I "want to become a better photographer", and "learn how to use my camera". Smiling

I don't think Dave's Photography forum welcome post is confusing at all. The Share your photos thread clearly goes against Daves wishes; this forum is not supposed to be a gallery of pretty photographs. The subject of showing pics just for the pleasure of it was touched on multiple times early in the forum's history - in fact, even immediately prior to the start of the "gallery" thread, yet it was started anyway!

From that start, I was saddened by the blatant disregard for Dave's directive. But I put this in the category of 'not important enough to worry about.' I am thankful that the thread pretty much keeps members from posting similar "just a petty picture" individual threads, and funnels them into the one, so I only need to ignore the one. I come from a different era, when more people looked beyond just themselves and there own noses. Notwithstanding this post, I've now learned to be very careful when pointing out such transgressions, lest I be the one ostracized, rather than the transgressor.

Again though, not important enough to worry about, in my opinion. Just sad. Sighing!

So then @Leftwood Rick, if I become 'ostracized', does that mean I become an ostrich? Green Grin! --If so, then bring it on!! I hear those ostriches can be some pretty bad birds.

There is a similar discussion in the Site Forum about the use of the Landscape Photo feature as simply a 'bucket of pretty pictures' - not really helpful to the database nor do they fall under the intended purpose of landscape photos. Perhaps we just need a place to toss pretty plant pictures, with no other purpose than simple eye candy. ??

Sorry you haven't gotten as much response as you would have wanted yet, Teresa. This can be a problem even on dedicated sites as good photo critique can be hard to find. It is always a difficult thing as most people feel uncomfortable saying what may be perceived as negative. I'm happy that you found the thread and I'm going to have a look, although I must confess (and this is not related to the discussion above) I'm more into nature photography, so do not feel as comfortable commenting on other types of photography.

Please look at the number of replies for the share thread vs. any other thread. Gee, must be popular.

What is your point? How is popularity relevant to this discussion?

Apparently, Dave is not worrying about the rogue thread.
And neither am I .... until pointless statements are put forth as supporting truths.

. . . I agree, and I wasn't trying to take away from that Shrug! . . . that wasn't my point in posting; because I believe I too posted to that thread. And *then* I read Dave's thread.

My question was: "did things change?", so that I could feel okay *myself*, and that it was okay for *me* to post there. Yep, this question was about "ME". Everyone must answer to themselves. Anyway, I within my being, have to answer to myself for what actions *I* take.
