Planted garlic today for the first time ever. I seem to battle a lot of pests on all of my plants here in Los Angeles, and am wondering how to best prevent pests on my garlic? Should I put a row cover on these guys today? If so, does anyone have a suggestion for the best row cover for a rectangular container?

Are you sure that pests will bother your garlic? I've never grown it but have sprinkled garlic powder (NOT garlic salt) all over my yard to deter pests.

I also just planted garlic a while back. I'm mulching it with straw as soon as I can locate some. Which pests bother your garlic? This will be my first time trying to raise my own garlic.

No pests as of yet! And this is my first time growing garlic, so maybe I won't have any! I just know that my tomatoes struggle with hornworms all season, and I lost three bean crops to leafminer and whitefly damage. (I've since started a new bean crop with a row cover in hopes that they will make it!) Anyway, just wanting to be preventative since I don't know anything about growing garlic!

I've grown garlic for the past few years and never had any pests bother it. In fact, garlic is thought to repel some garden pests as well as fungal diseases. I plant it in late Oct./early Nov. before the first frost here in New England, then cover it with some leaves. The shoots grow up through the leaves and we watch it grow all winter! Here's a photo of it in June, about a month before harvest.
