Every year as winter weather approaches and my gardens decline my interest turns to house plants. My Amaryllis, about 25, are now in the basement going dormant. Next week I will cut off the browning foliage and then let them rest for a couple of months. I bring them up as the buds start to show. Now I am finding great pleasure with my African Violets. The ones which I kept over summer are starting to bloom and I've found some beauties at some local nurseries. Here are some pictures which I am NOT proud of. The light isn't right but the pictures will give you a feel of how my violets are doing.......

Oh Paul, how beautiful! Your lovely blooms sure makes me think I should set up a light stand and start growing AV's and other Gesneriads again! Lovey dubby I'd definitely have to get gro-lights because window space is limited here.

By the way ... I couldn't find your gorgeous white Ness' Viking Maiden' in the database so I've submitted a proposal to add it and you will be able to upload some photos once it's approved and showing up.

Absolutely beautiful blooms, Paul! They will be very cheerful this winter! I also love the episcias. Have you tried them? They give non-stop bloom when they're happy and have good light.

Thanks Lynn.....none of the AV's that I find here locally have cultivar names but I found a picture of "Viking Maiden' on one of the commercial growers site. I am not using my gro-lites yet but will probably need to when the Amaryllis starting sending.up bloom. I have grown under lights before and the violets loved it....

Since many African Violets have many similarities and the plant didn't have a label, it's probably impossible to know for sure if it is actually 'Ness 'Viking Maiden' but photos can always be uploaded at the general entry for African Violets (Saintpaulia)
