Starting to get that time of year...this will technically be my first "full" winter of sowing seeds indoors. I've done a fair amount of research, but anyone got thoughts/tips about not-so-obvious things to do (or not do)?

My first batch germinated pretty well. But shortly after pricking out into slightly larger containers, several of the leaves began to turn light green or yellow...pretty sure this was from too much watering, so cut back.

Overwatering is the number one cause of failure in both seed starting and vegetative propagation. I think I can attribute about 100% of my failure with cuttings to excessive moisture.

I am using the jiffy pellets, the tomato seeds I planted before Christmas are about 3 inches high, I have been keeping them in small class baking dishes in a small cheap green house in our bathroom I pour some water in the bottom of the dishes every morning while I get ready for work. I have just gotten some basil to sprout doing the same thing.

Ive not used the Jiffy pellets before. Are you happy with your germination rate? I have not started tomatoes here yet...probably late this month

I don't think there's anything wrong with the jiffy pellets, per say. I just don't think the extra step is necessary. I guess if you are doing very large numbers of plants it might be convenient. But I just germinate seeds by soaking them in water and then I put them right in the pot they're going to be growing in for a while.
