I agree that we form certain loves (and certain hates) in childhood. My mom always had what we call a green thumb, so I can remember her getting, planting and decorating our small garden. Now she has a very big one, which makes her very happy. My parents also grow their own tomatoes and vegs and do their own canning. Me, not so much, a city girl.
In some Native languages the term for plants translates to "those who take care of us."
