I thought it'd be fun to talk about what we're going to buy and plan for 2018. I hope this isn't a duplicate thread; I didn't see anything similar.

I bought a bunch of tomato seeds today -- I didn't want to risk having them sell out...
Heirloom:
Black Krim
Kellogg's Breakfast
Brandywine, Sudduth Strain
Aunt Ginny's Purple
Ananas Noir
Clear Pink Early

Non-Heirloom Rolling on the floor laughing
Royal Hillbilly
Blush

I'm also thinking about growing some tomatillos and some mild peppers (I can't stand anything with any heat at all -- black pepper can be too much for me! I know--it's horrible). I may try Poblano or something [absolutely] mild that we can add to salsas, etc. I need to keep looking. I already placed my seed orders without ordering tomatillo seeds or looking at their pepper seeds .... D'Oh!

I'll start the seeds with my brand new seed germinating heat pad Hilarious! and these veggies will likely be grown in cloth pots. I need more control over the growing conditions than I had at the old tomato growing site and I've heard really good things about them! (Do you have any experiences to share?)

What are you planning for 2018? I'd love to see plans, plant/seed lists, etc. @legalily @dradiana -- we have to pass the time in the Winter, don't we?

@GenXNEGeorgia
I have tomatillos and bell type peppers coming from the seed swap. I'll share. Big Grin
Black Krim, Kellog's Breakfast and Hillbilly were on my wishlist (along with 38 other tomatoes Rolling on the floor laughing ), but I ran out of tickets. You can save any seeds you don't plant out of your packets, and offer them in a seed swap.
I don't have a clear plan. I tend to plant things on impulse. I'll post as I plant. Smiling

I definitely will save them -- my SO (significant other) almost dropped to his knees when I showed him everything I have been ordering for Spring delivery (@Legalily -- Lovey dubby Ginny, I lovingly blame you Hilarious! ), so I had to reassure him that we are NOT planting 30 seeds of each variety Rolling on the floor laughing

The Seed Swap seems a little complicated and I can't find anything (except a video) that explains it. I guess I'm going to have to suck it up and watch the video Big Grin I prefer to read/print instructions so I don't make mistakes/have to re-research when I forget Confused but it's perfectly fine to be flexible and try new things, like watching a video explaining a seed swap lol.

I can't wait to hear what's new in everyone's gardens for 2018!!

Once you sign up for a seed swap, there are threads with printed instructions, to which you can reply with questions/requests for clarification, etc.

Orders have been placed for 42 different varieties of tomatoes. And I only grow 30 varieties each year. This is the year to replace some old seeds and some that have gotten weary from saving and may have been crossed over the years. Out with some old and in with some fresh.

Swaps are OK, but I like to give business to my favorite seed sellers.

Wow, Paul -- 30 varieties Blinking I would love to learn how to manage something like that! I'm in over my head with 8 varieties Hilarious! Do you grow them in raised beds?

We don't have a proper garden bed [yet] for veggies -- this year they'll be in cloth pots, and I'm hoping those all work out Thumbs up

@DraDiana thanks for the pointer on the seed swap! I am happy to hear there are instructions because I am such a newbie Rolling on the floor laughing

No raised beds but a 50'X50' garden hacked out of the wilderness of Nebraska. I have grown in raised beds and loved them. Here with plenty of room I go all in-ground. Room for tomatoes and lots of other vegetables, too.

The impulse to set up an indoor seed planting area must have been the result of needing to burn off excess Thanksgiving calories. I rearranged 6 shelves in my basement to clear one at about arm level (so I can easily water and monitor the seedlings).
The plan is to hang a couple of 8' shoplights with grow bulbs in them, and find some way to keep water from dripping on the canned food below.

I hope everyone had good Thanksgiving Day!

Haha Diana it looks awesome!!! I need to get a light setup going as well.

Are you planning to use LED, fluorescent or those specialty full-spectrum bulbs? I have no idea what's enough. I tried seeds one year with two 2' fixtures (4 fluorescent bulbs) and I remember them getting leggy even though the bulbs were within a 1"-2" from the plants. I need to get my SO (significant other) on this project. He has until February to figure it out nodding

I also ordered some reusable germinating supplies. This one comes with organic seedling mix — mine has been hanging out on the porch (albeit closed) and I don't know if any pathogens may have gotten into it. The tray is also durable enough for "years" of use. Crossing Fingers!

So yeah.....I haven't told my SO (significant other) "how many" I want to plant this year Whistling

Jackie, I'm going to try aquarium bulbs - they are like "Grow Lights" as far as I know. I live in a tiny town - that's all they had at the local hardware store. In fact, they only had 4 bulbs in stock, and had to order 4 more for me. I'll let you know how they work out.

I have never used the expensive grow lights. In twenty years of growing my own all I have ever had were shop lights ( they were about $10 back in the day) with one cool white and one warm white fluorescent bulb in each fixture. Now my only expense is every year I replace bulbs on a rotation basis; I have six sets of lights so two new bulbs a year is pretty cheap. Oh, yes, my plants grow pretty good with this system. Just a thought.

@Bonehead Hilarious! I agree Makes me wonder how the whole family member abbreviation thing got started. It reminds me of the neighborhood kids calling themselves a "club", then making up club secret codes. Hilarious!
So what are your garden plans, Deb?

Thanks for clarifying, Diana.

I certainly didn't mean to cause any frustration; I'm just mirroring what I see on the site Shrug!

We used shop lights to grow 75+ seedlings about 8 years ago (that was a tragedy of a gardening year--we put everything in the wrong place -- we were renters who moved in during early winter--we had no idea where "full sun" would be. We lost all of our veggies for varying reasons). It worked really well but when we were looking at replacing our little setup, we saw the grow light on sale and just went for it. I'm thinking that we only need one of those -- in addition to the regular LEDs, they also include IR LEDs -- and then add-in shop lights where we need supplemental light.

This is the first year that I've planned a veggie garden at our new place, and after two surgeries this year, it's the only hobby I have left. Hopefully, I can get a good veggie yield and we can start canning Big Grin Hurray!
