My daughter took this photo while visiting Athlone, Ireland, this last summer. She was entranced by its beauty; Athlone is our family's hertitage site. We'd love to know its identity and see if it might be grown somewhere in California (I live by the ocean, she lives high in the mountains).

The vine was climbing up a stone wall, delicately growing but flourishing all over the castle. As seen in the photo, it has graceful 1/2-in violet flowers with two petals pointing up and three pointing down.

We'd love any information you can provide, including a source where it might be obtained. Thanks!

I can't see the leaves closely in your photo but I wonder if it could be a variety of Toad Flax? Kenilworth Ivy (Cymbalaria muralis)

Here's a photo from our database that I linked to above:

I remember seeing it on the rock walls in Bath. I believe plantladylin is right about it being Ivy-leaved Toadflax.

One showed up in one of my beds either last summer or the year before but it didn't live long. I would love to find seed packs for this!
