Mammillaria species? They aren't really spines, they are soft and flexible.

Where in the heck did you find that one? Yes, I think it is. One of the characteristics of Mammillaria is the little tufts in the axils (between the tubercles) - that is where the flowers grow. The little tufts can be cottony or bristley. In this case, I guess those long spines could be the bristles. The spines on the ends of the tubercles can be fine to stiff, long to short in any combination and of any number.

So, yes, Mammillaria. It is so unique that it shouldn't be difficult to further ID if you can find a comprehensive list of Mammillaria species - there are only about 200 of them. Smiling It might be an easier task if you wait for flowers.

Unos Picos here... these plants have been here about a decade and are in day-long sun. Compare the shape with your plant -- the difference is mostly due to the exposure.

Fun fact about the name: "un pico" does not translate that easily into English. Perhaps the best word is "spike" from this list:

https://www.linguee.com/englis...

but the meaning has more to do with the root verb picar, which means (among other things) to sting or bite. The word picante (hot/spicy) comes from the same root.

With this particular plant, the spines are not super dangerous... seems like I'm more a danger to them then they are to me.
