I was watching some videos about farming peonies in Alaska. They are very interesting! Anya and Mary, maybe we can get together and start a peony farm up there someday. But seriously, Alaska is an ideal place to grow peonies for cut flowers because of its late blooming time. Peonies bloom in Alaska in early July when blooming is already over in the rest of the world. Here are links to the Utube videos:
There is a Farmer's Market every weekend in Anchorage. I went and saw some beautiful peonies for sale but couldn't buy them at the time. I went back and the vendor was not there. One day I will return and bring home an armful of giant peonies,
Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love Truly, Laugh
uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you Smile.
Wow, those are beautiful, Cheryl! They look so fresh for cut peonies! If I ever visit Alaska, I will plan to visit when the peonies are in bloom. I would love to see the blooms in person.
they have a peony growers association but only a small group out in the valley for home growers. The Alaska Peony Society. I joined just to be supportive though I don't like to drive that far especially in winter. The road has too many accidents. They came into Anchorage for one meeting at the botanical garden and Will did a presentation for them. I gave a workshop also and had about 12 participants. I can't imagine why more people don't grow them here.
