I love my Nandina plants and wish to grow more.

But a friend has told me that they invasive, and are toxic to birds and mammals. I love the birds and my cats, too.

So my question is:

Are the birds and the cats really dumb enough to eat toxic stuff like Nandina?

I have nandina all over out here and my neighbors have lots of cats (they don't spay, so at one time we had over 20 cats here) I also have 2 toy poodles. I have never seen any of them mess with the plants. The cats hide in them, play and jump but they have never ate them.

I too have lots of Nandina and animals. Nothing seems to eat it.

Thank you all for the answers about Nandina. I recognize the danger to birds, wildlife, and pets and care about them.

But they are lovely and evergreen. Can you suggest alternatives in Z7 MD? Are there 4-5' holly bushes that might serve as fence backgrounds for example? I've tried eunonymous shrubs, but they always grow too tall.

The Yaupon Holly sounds interesting, but I'm looking for something more like 4-6' tall, And I'm in Z7, but something just barely in that zone will struggle.

I may try digging up and transplanting Golden Euonyous, as they seem to like this zone, and sprout from roots well.

The list of toxic/invasive evergreen shrubs seems endless. And I already have lilies which are not cat-friendly. Its hard to find something both safe AND suitable...
