@silversurfer you're right. This has 5 calyx. Perhaps the mystery deepens... Or maybe I just have to wait until it flowers to see.

Your shrub is really familiar to me.

I wonder if it is Deutzia sp?
Opposite leaves, flowers 5 petals, 5 calyx, hollow twigs. fit with your pics.

Even the marking on the bark looks right. Give link time to click in to image.

Do please add pics to this thread next year to show the flowers.

It reminds me of forsythia.

Forsythia flowers are single coming directly from a branch.

Seed pods are very different.

The mystery shrub has racemes or/spikes or panicles of flowers.
Many flowers on a stalk..
The bark of Forsythia is quite distinctive.

Are the leaves opposite? I can't tell, really.

If it was Forsythia, it would show significant lenticels which I'm not seeing on the stem. Having had a few Deutzia, I still think that is what it is.

Wow, thank you all so much. I am quite convinced by the diagnosis of Deutzia. I am due to be going back to the house next week and will try to get some more photos for you all. I checked in my plant encyclopedia and the only Deutzia which isn't upright but arching (which this bush is) is the D. longifolia. Seems like the closest match so far, and if it is this I'm thrilled as the flowers are beautiful. Thank you!

Do not assume Deutzia longifolia... id just using leaves is almost impossible to amateurs......
at this stage more pics would not get us any closer.

http://www.efloras.org/florata...

We grew many different Deutzia sp and cultivars...several can start straight and then bend over with the weight of leaves/flowers.

Wait for the flowers...they may be white or pink..single or double...all are beautiful.
Wait until you see the flowers open...then naming accurately will be possible.

100% Deutzia sp.
Love them!
Note the sort of crown at the base of the petals (sorry don't know technical term)
As to which one I am not sure.
Maybe Deutzia x hybrida....there are several named ones ..eg DEUTZIA HYBRIDA MONT ROSE
See pics below.
Starts pink fades whiter.

The buds start pink then the flowers are white. I'll have another look at the plant and see if I can narrow it down.
