Welcome to the Porch Swing!

Everyone is welcome to join us on the Porch Swing a thread where we talk about cooking, books, pets, birthdays, TV, the area where we live, anything that won't fit into the regular daylily forum. The subject is always changing.

Don't worry about reading all of the thread, just jump right in. We're sure you'll enjoy visiting with us.

We have many threads covering a wide variety of information on the topic of Daylilies. The Daylily Forum has two threads for off topic discussion - Weather In Your Garden for weather related chat and The Porch Swing for all non-daylily messages and chat.

When a new Porch Swing thread is posted, the old Porch Swing threads will be left up for a few days, then periodically deleted, so be sure to copy any items out of the old thread that you want to keep when you see a new thread is up.

* All other off topic threads will be relocated to the appropriate Forum. If you inadvertently post an off topic thread to the forum, please let us know and we'll move it into its proper place, and if we see it before you do, we'll let you know by Tree-mail that we moved it.*

florange said:I'm currently in the process of making tamales (2nd day). I'll finish tomorrow with enuf to last us at least 6-8 months. The filling is roasted port and I made my own red chili sauce (it's the true essence of chili--has garlic and a 1sp of oregano and nothing else but dried anchos and New Mexico chilies). Anyway, I cut the pork very fine. Started cooking with finely diced onions, then added the roasted pork. Browned it a bit then added the red chili sauce and water/stock. Cooked it down and use the stick blender to shred the pork. During the last 10 minutes I added roasted ploblano chilis to the mix and cooked it down. That will be the filling for the tamales. It's in the fridge now.

Next week is supposed to take us into the freezing zone--Thursday is supposed to be 31 degrees. Last night Accuweather said 51 and because of our location we expected 52 or 53. Nope. The low was 47. But it must have just bounced off of 47 and rose again because I harvested this morning. Gathered 1.5 lb Anaheim peppers and 5 ancho peppers, green beans, radishes and 2 kinds of tomatoes. In Denver (where I grew up) tomatoes would not set fruit until the temps were below 55 degrees. Well, my little Garden Gems still had blooms and are loaded with fruit. We haven't had a freeze in more than 10 years. I have a croton in the front yard that freezes down and take 2-3 years to recover. You can believe it will be covered even if I want to trim it back or even eliminate it. It is brilliant red!

My tamale process was put on hold after the afternoon nap because we moved the potted tomatoes and a bunch of other stuff into the garage. I have an Aero cart that I can use to tote the plants outside during the day (the garage faces south so the plants would be happy!!). And then bring them inside near dusk. My veggie garden has yielded more than I ever thought it would!! I'll take pics tomorrow AFTER THE TAMALES are done Thumbs up Thumbs up Whistling

After the tamales, I'll pull out a long-time sewing project. It's a warm throw for the sofa. It's about half done, so I need to finish it. That's what I do when I can't work outdoors!! Winter has come too soon!!!

Smiling Sounds good to me! Sitting by the woodstove quilting is one of my favorite winter projects. Would love to see images of your throw Arlene.

Mike, thank you for such kind words! You have made my day! We all love our daylilies, and you all show that each day here on this wonderful site. Though David and I do not post often, we do check in to see what is going on. We all especially need and appreciate the photos, words of wisdom, and freely given support as we hunker down and try to stay warm. Now is the time to plan, re-energize, and dream. (BTW, dreaming is free and the garden is in perfect shape). May 2018 be the best daylily year yet! Thank You! Lovey dubby Doris and David

With heavy heart I just found out that our dear friends' granddaughter, Anna, died last night at the age of 13. Her mom, Lesa and sister, Emma all live in California and our friends live here in our town. Anna had GPA auto immune disease. She went in the hospital around the middle of October and they felt they caught it in time so hopefully they could treat easier. She never went home after she got there. Please keep them in your prayers.

I agree. And it's so hard for them to be so far from their daughter and other granddaughter right now. I know my girls would want me there for comfort. Just a tough situation all around Sad

Mike,

I reiterate what Doris said. Thanks so much for your kind words! What a "pepper upper." I took some time off from AHS and Regional work during 2016 and 17, but am excited to get back into the fray a little bit. Have scheduled several speaking engagements and a couple of accredited shows to judge in 2018. Judging daylily shows is such fun.

Today, it is FREEZING here, as it is in many parts of the country. Yesterday after getting all of the Christmas decorations put up and all of those rooms cleaned, I bundled up and went outside to install two squirrel baffles on the bird feeder poles. Today it has been hilariously funny watching the squirrels finally ( at long last!) be thwarted in their quest to attack the supposedly (but not) squirrel proof feeders. The birds have also been flocking to the heated birdbath that is attached to the rail around the deck. My cats make those funny chirping noises when they see the birds from inside and can't get to them. It doesn't take much to entertain me when it's too cold to get outside, as you guys can see!

I just really cannot imagine losing a child. I cannot imagine how you would ever be the same. Or ever be sane again. It has to be devastating.

Ginny what is GPA?

Granulomatosus with polyangiitis, formerly called Wegener's Granulomatosus. The body attacks its own small blood vessels, usually in the sinuses and lungs, but may attack the kidneys' small blood vessels. It is very rare in children, and can usually be successfully controlled (not cured) with steroids, so I'm thinking this outcome was totally unexpected.
Definitely heartbreaking.
