I was looking at the Monterey Bay Nursery site just for fun and I came upon this fun fern and checked the Database here and it's a different fern. Hemionitis arifolia is what they have for it which is a synonym for Golden Leather Fern (Acrostichum aureum) accoding to COL.
Golden Leather Fern (Acrostichum aureum)
So my question is....what is the fern picture on their site?

I think the problem here is the use of the common name Golden Leather Fern for two very different Fern species. Hemionitis arifolia is not a synonym for Acrostichum aureum, despite what it says on this site.

Hemionitis arifolia is the accepted name for Heart Fern (the fern in Monterey Bay Nursery's photo). The synonym is Asplenium arifolium.

You just found a mistake in your data base - Hemionitis arifolia should not be listed there. It is native to the America's and related to Maiden Hair ferns.

Neither should Parahemionitis arifolia. This plant is native to Taiwan and there were only a few plants ever seen in just one location. If you want to read the complicated version of what I just wrote, here it is:

https://sites.google.com/site/...

What is comes down to is that neither synonym listed for Golden Leather Fern in our data base should be there.

The database mods had been Calif_Sue, eclayne, KentPfeiffer, and zuzu, but I believe one or more may have 'retired' and the newest I think is Australis.
I could be wrong so you could use the @ feature to ask dave.

Any member can offer corrections to the database. Thumbs up

According to the Catalogue of Life (December 2017) Acrostichum aureum is the accepted scientific name with H. arifolia as a synonym: http://www.catalogueoflife.org...

Leslieray, your link to the site didn't work; can you try again? I can't seem to find ferns on their site by google search. Confused

I think I found the photo at Monterey Bay Nursery site. The listing says: "Hemionitis arifolia fronds, a charming little subtropical evergreen fern that bears large, hear-shaped fronds to about 4" long on hard, black petioles. To just about 4-6" tall and wide, it prefers small containers and spaces and neutral to alkaline soils. It will form babies on the leaf veins with age. Fertile fronds are longer than sterile fronds and slightlydimporphic. Southeast Asia. Polypodiacea. Protect from frost until further notice. rev 10/2007."

They only show a single photo of fronds: http://montereybaynsy.com/plan... and to me, it looks a lot like one I left at our old house when we moved: Parahemionitis cordata

Hemionitis arifolia is native to the Paciic Northwest and grows in trees. It is not the same plant as Acrostichum aureum.

I'll try this again:

https://sites.google.com/site/...

Oh good. It works this time.

Ferns! Everyone is correct here. Lyn, I think, has the MonterayBayNursery plant correctly ID as Parahemionitis cordata. Daisyl great detective work. Complicated nomenclatural history for anything called "Golden Leather Fern" I think this site goes by COL and until they catch up to corrections this site will sit tight before making any changes. May take decades to get it right. Greene found the thread that would have saved me from asking. Everyone got it correct. Always so impressive I tip my hat to you. . Monterey Bay Nursery should know.......

We don't have Hemionitis arifolia listed in the garden.org database because Admin. here goes by the Catalogue of Life and the CoL shows it as a synonym for Acrostichum aureum

Catalogue of Life: 20th December 2017
World Ferns
You selected Hemionitis arifolia (Burm. fil.) Moore.
This is a synonym for: Accepted scientific name: Acrostichum aureum L. (accepted name)

Yes, I read all that but I also know that we are talking about two completely different plants.

Hemionitis arifolia

Acrostichum aureum
https://www.google.com/search?...:

Its up to you to decide what to believe. I believe Catalogue of Life has made a mistake.

As an impartial observer, I agree that they are very different plants.
