Don't give up on them, Lilli. I've had a few that have 'vanished' but later reappeared out of the dirt - they were buried (in storms, I guess) but found their way back to the surface. Crossing Fingers! that yours do the same.

Very sorry to hear that, Lilli. Sad It sure has been raining a lot.
As Mika said, hopefully there is something left under the mud. Crossing Fingers!
Are there no visible signs at all of them?

SDB Burlesque Cutie does not live in my garden any longer. Sad That makes two new irises that i have lost this fall/winter. Glare

Sorry to hear that, Bonnie. Thumbs down
My Burlesque Cutie is also struggling in the mud, but at least I can still find the rhizome.
You don't know if it will grow until you try!

Mika, William - I promise to look very carefully when I dig out the rest of the plants in that bed but I'm not particularly optimistic...

Hopefully they are still there and you can dig them out, Lilli. Sad

Sorry for your losses, Bonnie. Crying

One thing that (newbie that I am) I have noticed is how small those SDB rhizomes are. I have to wonder if that has any effect on their toughness, or being able to survive when conditions aren't perfect.
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

So sorry about Burlesque Cutie, Bonnie. Sad

yes. Others around it are dormant but the rhizomes are still plump and there is green showing on the old leaves. Burlesque Cutie has no leaves and the rhizome is the color of dried mud and it is shriveled like an old piece of leather. The roots that it came with are just brown and useless. I will leave it in its place along with its marker. I plan to replace it.

Lilli, I hope they pop back up, or you're able to dig them up and find them. Sad These are examples of when I'm sure a vanished iris wont pop back up.

I'm sorry to be late on this thread and sorry fir everyone's losses. Way back near the beginning I saw a comment about soaking rhisomes & HOPE that it meant soaking the ROOTS of the rhisomes. They are the only part to soak.

Irises have to adapt to different climates & on another threat we were talking about hybridizing in different climates & getting the great west coast plants into tougher winter conditions. I am sure that the reverse is also true, getting plants hybridized in tougher climates to enjoy life in California.

I really hope you can get those under control. We are lucky to not have them here, but I know how frustrating it can be to try to get rid of other underground pests.

I see you put some revenge medicine down that hole Rob...

What annoys me, is that I was really diligent trapping gophers last year in the pasture that is adjacent to the orchard, where I've had the damage.. I hired a guy with a tractor to come rip up the field.. but he and Dave got in a discussion of the size of their rippers before he came over (don't go there Whistling )... So the tractor guy (also named Dave) just planned on using Dave's tool. Well, Dave's wasn't as big as tractor Dave's, and was actually in pretty bad shape.. a couple of the rippers fell off on the first run around the field. Now it's too wet to do it. The reason for all this was to disrupt all the years of highways the gophers have built, and I could monitor new runs, and trap accordingly. Now I'll have to wait until next year.. all because a couple of guys had to brag about their tools.
The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us.
