The little knobby things on the stem remind me of bottlebrush.

It sure looks like Bottlebrush to me too. Those stems and leaves remind me of the Weeping Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis) we had at our old house.

There are apparently a few Callistemon in Australia:
