I live in Florida and have a croton plant outside and it has black stuff on the stems and leaves. What is this and how can I get rid of it?

You may have a scale problem. Closley look on the stems and underside of the leaves. The scales cause the black sooty mold you are seeing. Easy to treat with Bayer 3 in 1. I learned from Croton growers keeping used coffee grounds around base of plants keeps the ants away that garden the scale.
The sooty mold can be washed of the leaves with Dawn dishwashing soap and water using a sponge.
