Decided to give Thelma her own thread and update as new visits occur. About 20 minutes away, lives this wonderful lady, and the garden and business she created, from some extra land on the family farm. It is called "Mom's Out of Control Hobby". At 90- ish, Thelma still can be seen driving her golf cart through the Iris fields, looking for weeds to eradicate. With much enthusiasm, Thelma says she enjoys weeding her fields daily, and being outside with the Iris, and the people who come to appreciate them. Each Spring we visit, a few times really, watching the swaths of color change, and giving in to buying a few more. From the street, it is an eyecatching sight, that never fails to take your breath away. :smily: Here is an article about her: http://flowergardengirl.wordpr... Here is a more flattering photo I took of Thelma, on my last visit. ![]() and her daughter ![]() There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. Wow, just was jumping in and reading articles. Thelma looks thouroghly happy. What a wonderful thing. Those that never garden have no idea how fulfilling it is to live for gardening and how peaceful it makes you feel. Is she selling any of her iris thru mail now? That is just too far for me to go. I do not like to drive, but I am sure if I was one of the lucky ones that live withina a few hours from her, my husband would surely take me there so I can purchase some of her iris right from her gardens. I live by Chicago and way to far. Looks like I just need to find another gardner going that way and will get some for me, does this ever happen on these sites? doglover |

Shannon, I love your dogs with the Bunny ears!! The link is working again (above). By the way, a few of the Iris from Thelma are budded now and ready to pop, which means I need to start thinking about taking a ride over there soon. There are two ways to live your life. Yes, they are quite inexpensive...last year they were about $4-6 each, some even less, I think. Usually I get double clumps in bloom . She sells the cut flowers too. They have started blooming now. Tell me about using bone meal..how much do you use and do you work it into the soil before you plant or spread it around the plant on top of the soil and let the rain wash it into the soil? Is this a one time application or maybe every Spring? |

I've read this article years ago. @lestv have you ever been here? Last year I said I would make a visit if possible in 2016. Gimme it and I'll grow it! |

Gabe @cuzz4short - No I haven't been. Maybe we should go at the same time - then we could do the First Avenue/Art At Dawn swap too. It is about half way between us. My road calls me, lures me west, east, south & north; most roads lead men homewards, my road leads me forth. - John Masefield |

That's what I'm thinking.. I'm pretty sure I'll bring home a few extra goodies as well. I found the address before and will again, maybe it's in the article. There's tons of articles and pics from her chaotic garden. Be careful, sounds like they'll put you to work also and I've heard to bring a fork or shovel as well. ![]() I'll research into and see what I can find then. Gimme it and I'll grow it! |
