I figured it was time to start a new thread for a quasi-new topic ![]() Doris tells me I can fit 92! daylilies in my currently unused raised bed. So I headed over to the plant database thinking it would be a good starting point for planning (a word I rarely use, btw). There are 71 THOUSAND results if I browse hemerocallis - would love to narrow that down by bloom time, but can't quite figure out how. Seems that all I can search on are key words. So - can y'all either tell me what I'm doing wrong, search-wise, or point me towards a site that will let me search for daylilies by bloom tiime, height, etc? Thanks! Hey Mary, I'm not sure how or if you can search that way here, but you can on the AHS database. http://www.daylilies.org/Dayli... On the right you will see advanced search, click on it and just check or write in the various things you're looking for (years, height, foliage, bloom time, etc). Then if you find something you like you can come back here to see if there are garden photos people have uploaded. www.pensacoladaylilyclub.com |

The years I was buying daylilies, I went without something else, so I could afford the daylilies. I just didn't go out to eat or buy new clothes etc. Who needs new clothes when you'll just be in your gardens all the time enjoying those new daylilies? ![]() No two gardens are the same. Oh, I understand that! Sense our new home was built, and we have a larger mortgage to go with it, I have less things to 'Go without' too! We've already cut out dining out. And grocery's can't be one of them. Though it probably wouldn't hurt me personably one little bit. ![]() No two gardens are the same. No two days are the same in one garden. ~Hugh Johnson |

Mary, here is the link to the Lily Auction. Looking is free! Buying can be addictive. Click on the name of the daylily and you will find information about the daylily and the picture. You may see some that you really like and can be on the lookout for those. Some people have sales in the spring and you can get some really pretty daylilies for a few dollars each. IF you should decide to bid on the Lily Auction, take a look at the shipping charges. You can spend a bunch of money on shipping. If you get more than one from the same seller, you can save on shipping charges. Also, you may want to ask here about the seller(s) to see if anyone has experience with a particular seller. You will be amazed at how quickly your new empty raised bed will fill up! ![]() http://www.daylily.com/cgi-bin... Also, I found some really good sales late summer last year. You might not have as many choices, but you can get some really good deals. Another thing is your local daylily society sale. I have gotten some amazing deals at the Madison one every August. Also, in Madison at least, Sunday is half price day. Us enablers? Say it ain't so!!!!! ![]() |

What fun you are going to have Mary! Many of us have no more space, yet a list a mile long of daylilies that we want! Might I suggest not just spending your money by a description or a picture? Made lots of mistakes that way when I was first collecting! Now have about 1000. Lost count when I lost tags and moved things around. I'll tell you a short story. When I first got interested in daylilies, and plants, and gardens, I read the books that stated something like 'buy 3 of the same plant'. Well, I did! What a waste of money. Daylilies when purchased as a double fan or mini clump usually multiply by doubling every year. But... I did have a daylily to trade the following year, and the year after! You might want to think about that as well. If you get a bonus plant, you may want to divide it that first year and in 2 yrs will have 2 more plants to trade! BTW, there is a trade mart that will take place via the mother robin starting this next week! I think members trade here as well. A couple of thoughts: ONLY BUY something that is grown and does well in YOUR area (not mentioned in your profile). I have found that daylilies from the south often do not do well here, north of Boston. Like the ruffled ones might not open, the plant might grow but not produce many flowers, or the plant might not multiply well. As well, for me, southern gorgeous big fat foliage dies out completely as northern foliage takes its place. That is stressful for the plant. ONLY BUY plants that you have seen in someone's garden or that you have seen pictures of from many sources. Everyone only shows that perfect bloom! And that might not be indicative of the bloom in your area. BUY FROM THE HYBRIDIZER when you can. They often have great stock of their older ones, and often send another of their intros as a gift! MAKE SURE that you look at the size of the bloom. A huge thing might look good for just one bloom at a time, but smaller blooms make a pretty bouquet. Oh, and plant height is not always the same in different regions or different plant culture. When you get a list of a few, come back here and we can comment on them. BUY FROM your local club, and actually see the plant that you are getting. Some great buys usually in spring and fall at their plant sales. Such as $5 for a plant that might cost $20 if ordered. Please tell me the steps you took to get that, because I never got there on my own, and I'm usually DAMN good at figuring out stuff like this. For now it's in beta phase so I just bookmarked it from a thread that Dave posted. I also just added it to the first post in the Daylily Database Tutorial sticky thread. |
