I need help ......!!! :(:(:(
I've been trying to edit the .CSV file that our iris lists, in our profiles, can be saved as. The printing option ..... um isn't valid for me -- tried that once and the result was 26 pages!. I'm only getting data on some of columns but the most important column of all, the "plant" column is all blank.
I'd really like to get a concise list of the entries in each of the categories in my profile, since I'm gearing up to transition my retail website into a primarily trading type of enterprise this year (2018). I've tried to download the latest .CSV file from my profile and it can't be read in either excel or if word opens it, there is data missing from the "plant" column.
I admit, I'm not all that knowledgeable on working "comma separated values" type files, but I sure could use some help from those in the forum who are more knowledgeable on stuff like this.
I sooo much appreciate any assistance you folks could provide. I've included a screen shot of what I'm talking about

@TBMan, I've just moved this thread to the 'Site Talk' forum to increase visibility.

@dave, there definitely seems to be a few issues with the CSV export, as when I try exporting one of the categories from my plant list, Excel really doesn't like the result. I noted the following issues:

- No column headers
- No data in the name field for items not associated with a database entry
- Double quotes in the notes or plant event fields messes with Excel

I wasn't able to replicate this.

@Australis which category of yours did you try to export to CSV? Give me steps to reproduce this.

@dave

No problem. I went to my plant list category 'Lilium I' (https://garden.org/lists/view/...) and clicked the CSV export button. Here is a screenshot from Excel:

I haven't resized the cells to show all the content (I did check that the other plant events are in Column G, they're just hidden as they are spread across multiple rows), but it should demonstrate the issues I commented on above. This may be part of the cause of TBMan's issues.

thanks but im an advanced excel user and looking for hidden columns due to workbook column spread was the *first* thing I did. The data in the first two columns is missing completely, and there are only 20 rows, where there should be hundreds.........

this is the screen shot in excel 2013 from my downloaded file --

This is the result when I try to edit in Gammadyne Software CSV editor Pro

Thanks Tim. Sorry, my comment wasn't clear - I meant that the issues I'd highlighted probably explain some of the problems you're seeing. I had a quick look at your plant list and noted many are custom entries (not linked to the database), which is the same issue that results in the first four rows of my dataset having empty fields. Ideally it's a good idea to link to the database if there is an entry, but this would only be a workaround for some of your plants.

@dave, is the CSV limited to exporting only what is visible on the current page? Timothy, do you have your posts per page/results per page set to 20?

thanks Australis, -- im in the process of correcting the "custom" entries which is one mistake that I realized I'd made. I been working for several weeks and have corrected many many of them, and although I'm not finished -- shouldn't the corrected entries show up tho in the final exported CSV file?
I will check my post per page settings and see what its set at.
I appreciate the help so much. I'm very open to the idea that its something I screwed up, and totally my fault, but if I could be shown how to fix it, I'd be very grateful I tip my hat to you.

Timothy, I don't think it's an issue at all in what you've done. All I've suggested is some workarounds for what I suspect are actual bugs in the system. We'll have to wait for Dave to check it out and see what he comes back with.

I see why the names are being left off and I can fix that in the morning. I'll do a full review of this code when I wake up and get some coffee. Smiling

Okay, the names issue should be solved now. I also added a top row for column names.

I tested a few and they validated and loaded fine in libreoffice. If anyone is still having trouble with this, please report it here. Smiling

Thanks Dave. Looks like that's resolved most of the issues that I can see. Unfortunately I think the problem with the double quotation marks in comments not being parsed properly is Excel-specific. I've replaced them with single quotes as a workaround.

So you're seeing two quote marks in a row? Which comment is triggering this behavior?

I had a comment in a plant event stating that I had been supplied "Pearl Jennifer" as a substitute for "Sweet Surrender". Replacing the double quotation marks (") with single quotation marks (') has solved the issue. As I said, I think it's a problem with Excel's parsing.

I tip my hat to you. I tip my hat to you.
Thanks for your efforts :)
ill retry to download my csv file to see if anything changes. I purchased Gammdyne CSV File Editor to get more specific editing controls over the CSV file, and I'd like my purchase not to be in vain, lol
The dedicated software give me more specific control options over the final output, than Excel, or its open source equivalents, like Libre Office, and similar
