Anyone know a place I can get a Spiral Aloe, or maybe seed from a spiral aloe?

Got mine on ebay but watch out for any seeds from China. Got mixed aloes once (not too bad) but the next two times was weeds. (grass seed) Once from Israel but it was dead, I think due to mail x-rays. Buy from USA. It is more but you usually get what you ordered. I see plants for sale as well but it is very costly.
Spiral aloe is unable to produce seed by itself. It needs another type of aloe to pollinate with.
Which means this plant in time will cease to exist due to hybridizing.

I sure agree about buying on Ebay. I've gotten scammed a few times with seeds from other countries. I try to only buy from the US now, and so far I've had good luck.

Sadly, Spiral Aloes don't produce off shoots even if deadheaded. You would think that it might that it is hybridized with other types. Don't have all the details but I don't know which if any aloes that is used for pollen parent. Few aloes don't produce off shoots most do.

There are a few dedicated spiral aloe breeders who are keeping the species alive in cultivation. It's not terribly hard to get them to make true seed if you're able to get them to grow to flowering size. Most of the plants currently being produced for retail sale probably come from tissue culture (vegetative reproduction) and are genetically identical, thus do not contribute directly to the preservation of genetic diversity, and can't be used for seed production without another (genetically distinct) parent.

Check out this thread:
http://www.agaveville.org/view...

And if you search for other threads on the site using Aloe polyphylla or Aloe polyphylla seed, you will find plenty of info on the plant in general and also where people have gotten their plants/seeds. One or two of the posters may have plants available.
