I live on the south shore of Long Island, New York.
I put my zip code in for 11951 resulting in zone 6a
But when I look at the map itself Long Island is zone 7a.

Which zone am I really in?

Looks like zone 7a,
http://www.plantmaps.com/list-...

But keep in mind, the plant hardiness zone maps are only concerned with the hardiness of a plant in the coldest part of your season. There are many other factors such as rainfall, humidity, heat, wind, etc. It's up to each gardener to learn what will grow best in their garden; the maps are only a guideline.

@dave, when plugging in the zip code the NGA map is from 1990. Is the zip code look-up only available for the older map?

USDA only tells you your 1st and last, frost dates. ( Averaged over past 30 years. )
Last frost date, doesn't mean its safe for you to plant say, squash, beans, summer, heat loving veges, etc.
What map do you have ?
Gurneys seed catalog has a good map for you to use. ๐Ÿ‘

The map I am referring to is their (NGA) map. The zip code result is not the same as the color index on the actual map. Not concerned with the frost dates, etc, or when safe to plant ... just wanted clarity of what my zone classification actually is since the data does not match.

I'll be redoing the USDA zipcode to zone search early this week. Stay tuned!

The update is complete and the page now shows you both the 1990 and 2012 zones based on your zipcode. You can then read the page and decide which one you prefer to use.

Go to Tools and Apps on the top of the page, select zone lookup.
Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.
