If you are using an Apple computer, Photos is the obvious choice.

For Windows, no ideas.

Thanks for your answer Frank.
I have a laptop and have recently downloaded FastStone Image Viewer, also had my geek reload Picasa and Adobe Elements 14. That aught to be enough back up programs for the rest of my life.
It just burns me Google doesn't support Picasa anymore.

I have used the FastStone and it worked well, but I vastly prefer ACDSee which I bought! Had an earlier version on my Windows 98 computer and it still works, but upgraded a year ago. I know you wanted a free one, but I don't see the need to upgrade in the near future at all and over several years, paying for something is worth it. OTOH, I hated Picasa; so YMMV.

I love ACDSee the best and have had it for years. Another one I like is PixLR.

So do you have a recommendation for an Ubuntu operating system ?

Apparently Irfanview runs well under Wine on Linux, although I have not tried this myself.

Thank you, Joshue...

How I ended up on Ubuntu is a long story, but I think one has to have a far more tech background than I do to use this operating system well.

Even the forums baffle me .. Sighing!

I am using Ubuntu 18.04 ... the upgrade was just the shell. OMG ... now I have to learn to write code again .... argggh. I've got some things working, but I have yet to figure out a LOT more.

As I understand it, Ubuntu and Linux may be in the same family, but they are not the same.

So far, I do not like any of the photo editing software that is compatible with Ubuntu. The shell automatically transfers photos to Shotwell, which I truly hate. I'd like to just put them into a directory / file in the documents part of the file manager until I can find a photo editing program that works for me.

I can't even figure out how to do that.

Maybe this is not a topic for this forum. If you can help me get past this hurdle, it should be handled in t-mails. I don't know.

I use more than one computer. One is just for editing pictures and watching movies. If your present system does not do what you want, perhaps get another computer that works well?

Thank you for responding, Gene.

Another computer is not in the budget at this time.

Well, I've been lurking around this morning and stumbled here. I have a Mac and would like to say that I don't especially care for Photos. I've been wanting something else.

Gene apparently likes Irfanview. Maybe I'll take a look at it.
