Hey, it's already February. It's been so cold here that I'm still only beginning to prune my roses. The thumbnail rose this month is Anne Boleyn, an Austin shrub. Sad news from Dave's Garden: PaulfromAl, whom many of you will remember from the DG Rose Forum because of his beautiful garden, his many funny stories, and his touching adoration of his pretty wife Linda, died on January 26th. Here's the link in case you still have access to DG: http://davesgarden.com/communi... ![]() |

That's really sad news. He wrote great stories and was a funny guy, for sure. |

Toni, are you getting clobbered with snow today? |

What a miracle. We got 3" of rain yesterday. It came down slow and soft, and get this--the day before was really warm so I went out and mulched all the beds that weren't already mulched. I had been to a day long seminar on building Rain Gardens, and someone mentioned that rain was in our forecast, so I washed my car on the way home. That always cinches the deal. We did lose power for about 6 hours when lightning struck the local substation. Kinda strange getting lightning and thunder without extreme wind. Strange for Kansas, anyway. Getting rain sure beats having to drag all the hoses out of storage. What a break for us. We have had no snow, and the December 20 rain was the only one we have had since early fall. The warm winter has given me lots of opportunities to pull out all the trees and shrubs that died in the summer heat and drought. I'm really looking forward to getting my orders from Palatine and Austin. Maybe, just maybe I'll get to go back to California in April (for the iris nationals) and we'll tour really nice rose gardens! And do some rose shopping....and iris shopping, of course. ![]() Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get. H. Jackson Brown, Jr. |
That is sad news about Paul, he was a great story teller and had a funny sense of humor. Gorgeous shot of Anne Boleyn Zuzu!! |
Thanks, Sue. The longer I garden, the more I appreciate David Austin roses. They never disappoint me. |

It snowed here for about 37 hours straight (see my thread here: The thread "Jan 24th.. what wild weather do you have in store for us?" in Roses forum as I updated it there w/pix). We got about 18" straight w/o the winds blowing the snow into drifts. Luckily I know how to drive in the snow, so this didn't slow me down at all. I shoveled my entire driveway (about 12' x 20') into my yard.. I can't see letting all that free moisture go to waste in the street!! I walked over to the mailbox earlier this evening to check my mail (it came through around 6 tonight) and the road is a solid sheet of ice. It's supposed to go down to 5 degrees tonight.. yay... but next weekend it's gonna shoot back up into the 50s! ![]() ![]() ![]() Roses are one of my passions! I always found that, when I lived in snowy New England, it only helps a little to be good at driving in the snow when you are surrounded by idiots who are clueless. Porkpal |

PPal - well, with all the people from warmer states who flocked to CO in the past 5 years because of the crashes in their various states not knowing how to drive in snow, I guess that would teach ya too. ![]() Roses are one of my passions! Nothing much going on around here lately. I am so ready for spring! |

We're getting our first snow of the season right now, but it's too warm to stick. Lotsa big pretty flakes falling, though. Forecast said 10% chance of any precipitation, so I guess I'm in the lucky 10% part of town! ![]() Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get. H. Last time they said a dusting to 1/2" we got 4", but it all melted away. Chance of more snow today/tomorrow. Of course it's gonna snow tomorrow - I got plans! Roses are one of my passions! Just opened, my Etsy shop (to fund my rose hobby)! http://www.etsy.com/shop/Tweet... |

First daffoldil blooms of the year just started around here. Very early this year as usually at least another month before they show up. In fact most are just breaking ground like in my first picture. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Way to go Rita! I'd love to see some other spring-time blooms.. all I have is 2'+ snow in my front yard. That's OK.. the lilacs are gonna be spectacular this year! And so won't my irises too!
