I'd grow this allium even if it never bloomed. The bluish-green foliage on a mature plant is marvelous: broad, just a little curvaceous, with a smooth rounded tip. They take a few years (from seed) to reach this stage, but it's worth it. I grow them in the rock garden.

The true Allium senescens ssp. glaucum is not in cultivation.

The true Allium senescens ssp. glaucum, verified by taxonomist Nicolai Friesen who published this subspecies combination in 1987. it's a tall subspecies that blooms in August
http://www.plantarium.ru/page/...

The true Allium senescens ssp. glaucum has long, upright, tall & very narrow silver foliage.

The true Allium senescens ssp. glaucum has spherical flower heads.

The cultivated plant Allium senescens ssp. glaucum (of Horticulture) is not the true subspecies, it's a hybrid "mix" of Asian A. senescens and an allied dwarf Asian species Allium austrosibiricum. The "glaucum of Hort." has dwarf mats of swirling foliage, flowering in September, and with hemispherical heads of bloom.

Lastly, the common name "German Garlic" does not apply to the Asian Allium senescens with gray foliage (found in Kazakhstan, Russia (Siberia), Mongolia, China, and Korea). The name "German Garlic" applies to the so-called European form of senescens with shiny green leaves (formerly A. senescens ssp. montanum), although that entity was changed to Allium lusitanicum two decades ago.

You are correct, Mark. I've edited this entry to show Glaucum as a cultivar name, which actually is the way it's listed by the sources selling it, and I've created a new entry for A. senescens subsp. glaucum.

By the way, does anyone actually call this plant "Corkscrew Lily", in my 40+ years studying the genus Allium never heard of that one before. The most frequently seen common names I've seen are Circle Onion, Curly Onion, and Cowlick Onion, not that I pay much attention to common names.

I also pay very little attention to common names. I added Corkscrew Lily only because a retail source identified it as such. Anyone who wishes can add a more appropriate common name.

I added 3 much more frequently seen common names I've witnessed, in my previous message.

I'll add those three. I meant that anyone could add common names by going to the entry and clicking on "Edit plant name."
