Hello,

My wife and I just bought a house and are looking to create an enclosure with large planters where we wanted to put up a fence, but since NYC laws prohibit a fence, we thought instead about using plants. The idea is create privacy, but we're woefully ignorant about what trees to use or the size of the planters we'll need. I've found plenty of 31-48'' wide rectangular planters out there, but I have no idea how wide or deep they'll need to be to hold up a 6' tree, or what kind of tree would be best to use since they'll be outside year round.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My knowledge of outdoor plants is limited. As a resident of NYC, I am interested to learn more about the fence restriction.

I can almost not imagine a property in NYC without a fence. Here's what I found.

Ha! Wouldn't you know that it would take a Georgian to find out the fence rules for NYC! Great work, Greene! Apparently, fences are very much allowed in NYC.

In most instances, we don't need fences, because there is already another building wall along the property line.

Hey guys,

Should have clarified--fences are allowed, but as you can see can be no taller than 6 feet. For our situation 6 feet isn't tall enough to provide any kind of privacy, hence the need to seek taller alternatives.
