It's that time of year again, Wintery weather outside, cabin fever, Gopher battles, Iris Deprivation Syndrome and all, it's time for a new story hidden in the depths of the iris pedals, and in the minds of the garden gnomes. Below is the list of rules that apply to everyone who participates, and everyone is encouraged to put your two cents worth into the story.

The goal here is to develop a story, not just include a bunch of iris names so as you write your contributions to the story, remember to develop the story theme.

Rules:
1. Once you make a contribution to the story you must wait until there are at least 3 contributions by other writers. (No matter how much you have that perfect next sentence.) EACH of the sentences must contain at least one named iris.

2. Each contribution to the story shall be NO more then 2 complete sentences, but avoid long run on sentences using more then one contraction. All contributions must be "G" or "PG 13" rated.

3. DO NOT INCLUDE PICTURES in your sentences. They make it difficult to follow the story. You may if your have more techno savvy then yours truly, make the name in "hot text" so people can just click on it to see a picture, if one is in the data base. Otherwise just put quotes around any iris names. If you want to you may put pictures in the companion thread.

4. DO NOT post comments about people's contributions on the STORY THREAD, there will be a companion thread where you can make comments or ask questions. Feel free, however to give thumbs or acorns to contributions you think deserve one. Especially if one entry makes you laugh until it hurts.

5. Remember this is a group effort and don't be offended if someone doesn't take the bate and write a follow up to your entry that you thought should go a certain way. The purpose is to have fun.

6. The name of an iris can be used more then once, when it is the name of a character, or place that is often revisited in the story.

7. If you cross posted with someone and you are the last poster, and your contribution no longer makes sense or doesn't fit well, then you should edit it to make a good fit.

8. The story cannot be concluded before 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 16, 2018.

9. HAVE FUN!

The title of the story is: The "Chisholm Trail " and the "Cow Town Capers"

FYI – The Chisholm Trail was a cattle trail leading North from San Antonio, Tex., to Abilene, Kan.: used for about twenty years after the Civil War.

Story setting:

The Year of our story is around 1870. The main character, yet to be named, is starting his journey from (?) to San Antonio looking for work on a cattle drive. This will be a tale of his adventures as he heads to San Antonio, gets hired onto a cattle drive, and all of the fun and adventures that happen between and at all of the Cow Towns along the way, as they wind their way to Abilene. (I just found out there's an iris named San Antonio and one named Abilene! No pictures though)
Now get started!

It had been several years since the adoption of the 14th Amendment, and "Sam Davis" riding out from "Darien", Georgia, smiled and patted the "nest egg" in his saddle bag that would finance his newfound "freedom" -towards a brand new life.

"Sam" was leaving behind the "Quaker Lady" and the "Buck Nay Kid" but "Adventure" was just a "Heart Beat Away".

At the end of his first day's ride, Sam hobbled his "Buckskin" gelding and turned him out to graze as he built himself a "Camp Fire" to warm his can of "Red Beans". He had covered a good distance today, but he knew he had a lot of "Miles Ahead" so he put out his bed roll, laid down and watched the "Setting Sun" getting ready for some "Slumber Time".

But Sam must have been a "deep dreamer" because "in the morning", "on awakening", he was faced with "quite ahh sight". A "truly wicked" "night thief" had made off with Sam's "fiery steed", leaving only a "footprint" and a "card of thanks"...

"Holy Cow", Sam sputtered, That "Dirty Coward" had to come in the "Night" to take my horse. Little does he know that he ain't "Worth Stealing", as he will go just so far with a stranger riding, and then he'll turn into a "Buckaroo" and send him "Flying" coming back to me.

Without his horse 'George', 'Sam Davis' knew he would never reach the 'Far Hills', so he decided to 'Sit Right Down' and 'Wait for George' while thinking of his 'Quaker Lady', who was a 'Farmer's Daugther' and a 'Belle Brunette'.

Unfortunately Sam was not a patient man and after a short time set off walking on his journey to find "Helping Hands". Along the way he encountered what looked to be a "Gypsy Prince", who had also been victim to "Stolen Sweets".

You're looking mighty poorly "Gypsy Prince", what's causing those "Green Gills?" , asked Sam. "Oh Sam", he replied, " I had me the worst "Lovesick Blues" and drowned my sorrows with a little "Sugar Dumpling."

Sam thought Gypsy would make a "Good Companion" and the two set off with the "Dawning Sun" after a breakfast of " Grits and Butter", hoping to meet up with a "Wagon Train".

Poor Sam kept fiddling with a "Gold Piece" trying to figure out why his horse hadn't shown up yet as he always dumped his riders within a mile. Well, except if'n it's a "Full Figured" "Cowgirl" he does like his "Rodeo girl"s.

Lost in daydreams of a "Cowgirl In Black", Sam forgot to pay attention to where he was stepping. It was a loud "Who'ee", what is that?" from the Gypsy that saved him from that fatal step into the "Cow Patty."

Sam gave "Many Thanks" to Gypsy for saving him, and then said let's get back to finding that "Wagon Train" and maybe they might have a fine "Frontier Lady" on that train that can make us a cup of "Coffee".

I could sure use a cup of 'Black Coffee', 'Sam' said. Not me, replied the 'Gypsy', I prefer a little 'Milk in My Coffee' or a good strong 'Spiced Coffee'.

Sam pulled his "Brown Hat" down on his head to shield his "Shadowed Eyes" from the "Sunblaze" as he scanned the "Horizon" for his "Honey Horse".

OK, said Sam, who knew the Gypsy had a reputation as a "Fortune Teller" so thought what he said might be "True" -- and if we are "Lucky" we may find the "Outlaw trail" and catch the horse "Rustler".
