I cover the garden with tarps when it is empty, and just mulch heavily when planted - works pretty well.

I usually advise people to wait for a heavy rain. Weeds are so much easier to pull when the ground is wet.

But, no, that would not work in Fresno. Rolling on the floor laughing Whistling

Nope!

Please let us know what plants you are calling "weeds" & what crops you are attempting to grow...

Most people recognize that the winter cover is essential to the soil health, and leave it alone... Until ready to plant the spring garden.

Some people deliberately plant a cover crop of winter rye to hold the soil and build up organic material... And then till it under before it goes to seed.

Can't do that with chickweed, though... The stems root... Use a hoe and rake up chickweed after it gets large enough to bother with... Or better yet, let the birds enjoy it until you are ready to plant.

Philip may have a productive garden year round. That is possible here too. So his weeds are plants not needed for ground cover.

That's why I asked what his target crops were.
I'm in 8a, same as Phillip.
I had lots of stuff before bombogenisis.... Most of it got wiped out in the deep freeze... But... Even if I hadn't lost my winter garden, I still wouldn't be able to use roundup on it.... Not too many roundup resistant winter crops...

Glyphosphate isn't good for us, anyway...
