I liked how you added a small introduction into the social aspect of the peonies. It's always been amusing to me since I've heard about it how the scholars idolized the plum blossom for its subtle bloom in their winter and often wrote angrily about the peonies as a way of the merchants spreading worldliness. High class secularism vs Confucius's moralism. In 2009 at the Huntington Professor Egan with Harvard with the East Asian institution did a short hour long talk about it. I think he covers the language of flowers dealing with that in his book the problem of beauty. But I'm under the impression there is only a few chapters dealing with beauty concerning flowers. Most of that even is more about interpreting modern versions of chinese gardening such as a plumb blossom growing in a area of cracked asphalt to mimic plumb blossoms growing through cracked ice and blooming before all the rest.
