"Becky's Dream" is amazing. I'm ordering Japanese irises for the first time this year, including "Lake Effect," which is one of theirs.

If they do well for me, I think I'm going to have to add at least a few more. The forms and patterns of these irises are stunning. I want to splurge for some of the newer ones, like "Koto Harp Strings," but will wait till I have more experience. My plan is to grow them in containers, and plop one or two into the garden next year.

Kyoto Harp Strings is a gorgeous one from Chad Harris. If you go to his site, Mt. Pleasant Iris Farm he has a whole section on how to grow JI's in pots.

That's great to know. I ordered from Mt Pleasant this year, but will definitely consider them next year. Also, I didn't notice, but that picture is your own! I have to ask, does "Lake Effect" look as good in person? That is such a pretty picture!

I'm also very curious about the foliage of these plants as well. Chad Harris says on his website that JI foliage can be straight or fountain-like, but the photos never show the whole plant and this information isn't recorded anywhere.

Not sure there is anywhere that the foliage traits are recorded. It would be up to the hybridizer to list that in their description I believe. Most of my JI's fall in the straight category.

I only wonder about the foliage because JIs are reputed to have beautiful foliage that looks good throughout the season and could itself be a feature of the garden. I've seen pictures of clumps of JIs that are gorgeous fountain shapes, and others that are very stiff and vertical, which are quite different effects in the garden.

Here's a couple of ensata from last year.

Lake effect and Iris ensata 'Satozakura'

And yes, Lake Effect does look good "in person"

I know that Chad Harris would let you know the foliage type for the ones he grows, and I am guessing Ensata Gardens would too. Send either or both an email asking about the ones you are interested in, or about which ones have which foliage shape.

We had the fellow from Ensata come and do a slide show presentation for our iris society a few years back. He has some magnificent glass work that he does also. He brought many plants to auction off. They were beauties.
We are working on having Chad Harris. Last year we did order a small club order from Mt. Pleasant for our club private sale. Most of our folks were not as comfortable with the LA and JI and other beardless but we are trying to get them exposed.

I hope they come around Jane, because the JI's are so graceful looking and Chad has created some beauties.

I am so envious. I have not placed an order this year. I want to see what happens with the ensatas I planted last year. They look happy, but will they bloom this year? Oh, please, please let them bloom Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers!
