|When a plant is suffering from a lack of water, the first thing that most plants do is to get rid of developing buds. They demand the most water.
I just hope that yours is growing in a cool place, they do not care for warm, dry air either. They need to be grown cool and in Florida this could be hard to provide.
Plants are not appreciative of being moved either, inside, outside, inside. That is not a good idea.
I realize how pretty they are with an intoxicating fragrance but growing a gardenia in Florida, I wish you a lot of luck.
By the way, they like even moisture, never too wet and never bone dry.

|A very thoughtful; and well-intentioned gift, but one that is nearly impossible to keep in bloom or to re-bloom. As mentioned previously, Gardenias do not like warm temps or changes in their environment. Either warm temps are a changed environment will cause the buds to blast.
It has virtually no chance in the very warm temps and direct sun outside in FL. You can try keeping it inside in a moderately sunny location that is also cool. Water it as soon as the surface of the soil is almost dry or just barely moist. You may want to keep it as nice foliage bonsai and not worry about getting flowers, which are very hard to get outside of a greenhouse.
