Much as you can block a person? There are quite a few threads that have active followings which I have zero interest in but nevertheless clog up my daily feed.

FYI, I've reconfigured my home page to show all recent threads which gives me a pretty broad overview of all the forums. Unfortunately, it also regularly includes (to me) daily drivel that has nothing to do with gardening (what you ate for dinner, what you didn't do in the garden, pet news, sadness, happiness, etc.). I have no problem with these threads existing (and I do participate in a few), but it would sure be lovely to somehow eliminate those that don't interest me from my personal universe.

No offense intended to anyone.

Can't you just "un watch" the thread?

Yes, I do that regularly. And many that crop up in my feed I've never even looked at. But when you are viewing all recent threads, even those you have unwatched or never opened show up and they seem to take up more real estate than I'd like...

It's a minor issue, I'm just wondering if it would be possible.

Pity. Perhaps it could get on the long 'to do' list?

I belong to a number of sites on the internet. On those other sites, we are usually told that...if something is not your cup of tea, feel free to ignore the posts, scroll on by, don't read the posts. If a person is so unlikeable, ignore them. If you don't like chit-chat...don't participate. Pets? Don't read the posts. Recipes/dinner? Don't read it.

This was and still is a very unusually cold and brutal winter for many people in the US (and possibly elsewhere). Folks had to do the best they could to keep occupied, to keep their sanity, to keep their spirits up until spring arrives. Spring has finally arrived where I live but many are still suffering with ice and snow. Yes, this is a gardening site - but because of the weather, many cannot yet start their gardens. So please, be patient until Mother Nature decides to grant warm weather for everyone. Once that happens, we can all get back to talking about gardening. Thumbs up

This NGA site works pretty good for the majority of members. Dave has put in place the 'ignore' feature and the 'report' feature. He cannot and should not have to change the site to please each and every person who develops a personal dislike for this or that or whatever. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this site. I only have 3 people on my 'ignore' list...(and @Bonehead is not one of them). I rarely report anything unless it is spam or truly an ugly post.

Why not just utilize the site the way it is, use all the features, use the ignore feature and the report feature...and ignore anything you don't want to see. Yes...'unwatch' things that bother you. No one will know you have unwatched at thread unless you make a post telling everyone.

I am very happy with NGA just the way it is. Sure, I've had to adjust to some of the changes, but...I pulled up my 'big girl panties' and got over it. Rolling on the floor laughing Thumbs up

As I said, it's a minor issue. I figure it doesn't hurt to ask. Not being any sort of programmer, I have no clue what things might be easy and what might be more involved. Some requests get immediate action, others Dave declines. Either way is fine with me. Guess I'll go look for my big girl panties (bloomers?) and get over it.

There is no reason not to share what would be more convenient for you, It is helpful for Dave to get ideas of things people have on their wish list for this site. I think it shows how open and flexible this place seems to me. Have a good evening Deb.

Suggestions for improvements are always welcome, even if the answer sometimes is no. Smiling

In this case, it's something that could be done but the amount of time it would take makes it get pushed pretty far down the backburner page... Smiling

I am a bit curious why the same person who does not like to see threads locked would now want to block threads for their personal convenience. Confused

When threads are locked, they are locked for everyone and the decision to lock any given thread is solely at the discretion of the admins; but to block would only be blocked from the sight of the person who does not want to see the thread. It is very curious indeed.

How would having the ability to personally block any given thread be any different than simply choosing to ignore the same? Blinking Confused There is no need for complicated programming; each of us has the ability to ignore that which does not please our eyes and our mind. (I know this because I ignore my next door neighbor every day; no need to have him and his junkyard mess eliminated just to please me. Rolling on the floor laughing )

Well Greene, that is an interesting question.

In my mind, locking threads is, as you note, a discretionary action taken by the administration, often for reasons that totally elude me. It feels a bit like the rug is pulled out from under you - even if you had something you thought was constructive to the conversation, you are simply unable to add anything. I have never seen any explanation why a thread is locked, it simply is. I am not in favor of that. At all. But, not my web site. So be it.

Blocking threads, on the other hand, would just be me tagging threads I have no interest in and not having them show up on my daily feed. It would not affect the thread itself, it would just move it out of my personal universe. The reason I asked is because many of the chat-threads get daily traffic and I end up having to scroll past them to see if there is anything of substance I might be interested in. Really really a minor imposition. As Dave has said, it could be done, is more complicated than likely worthwhile, so nada. I'm OK with that as well.

It's all good.

Please keep this thread civil. No insinuations about other people's character or provocative comments, thankyou.

Dick, there are many reasons people may not wish to use their real name on a public Internet forum.

I can't even imagine a situation that I personally set up, that would "flash" every new thread to my attention, daily????? I have certain interests, that I follow because I have some experience/interest with respect to same, good or bad, and may be able to contribute to the topic. I simply indicate "follow". But, to make certain that I am informed of every new thread posted, to me, indicates a problem? Then to ask if there is some way one can block out some of the universal new threads received daily, indicates another problem. I am just new here, but surely this is not Facebook? I often wonder why a very few members can pop up everywhere, without any particular interest or competence in the thread? To each his/her own preferences, I guess! PS. I love scrolling down the threads to see if any particular ones are of interest to me? Particularly right now when we are in a howling blizzard! Cheers!

Don't we have the option to un-watch any thread that doesn't interest us by scrolling to the bottom of the thread page and selecting the option "Unwatch this thread"?

It's not exactly "blocking" the thread but I don't think it pops up in our feed anymore, does it? Or maybe if we happen to find our way back to the particular thread and reply to a comment, it starts showing up again?

I don't use my real name due to safety or security reasons. If I used my real name there is a possibility that someone could figure out where I live and that is not smart. And I am smart. I don't see how that makes me or anyone eles any less of a person than you. If you want to put your ID and all your personal business 'out there', then by all means go full speed ahead, no one is stopping you.
