I created a monster when I dug new beds, didn't realize what was germinating and then due to health problems let it get out of hand. Now I need to know will a late winter/early spring application of pre-emergent do anything toward ridding my flower beds of henbit or must I wait for fall to do any good? I live in N. Alabama. I'm trying to hand pull as much as possible but know this will not take care of it as they are blooming. Am I wasting my time and money to apply pre-emergent in the next week or so.

Thanks,
Patti

I am pretty sure they are well into emerging by now, so pre-emergent won't help . I'm seeing a lot of winter weeds up, up here.

Yes, if the weeds are already up, they will not be discouraged. However, any lurking seeds that have not yet sprouted will be .

If it's an annual weed, you'll be wasting your time, and money.

I knew pre-emergent wouldn't help what is already up, but didn't know when new seeds would germinate. So, I need to use the pre-emergent in late summer for henbit? Is there anything I need to do now to help?

Hi Patti ,😀
Pre emergent applied , around 4 weeks before the time that seeds will sprout.
Depending how strong you mix it , it will kill seeds 2-6 months, IF, ground is not disturbed. Any ground that is disturbed, weeds will grow.

Thank you all for your help. I will try to get 2-4d out for now and will apply pre-emergent late summer or fall (will check locally when is best time here). My husband has just been diagnosed with a life threatening illness so I don't know what the near future holds and henbit is the least of my worries. He just wanted to do this while he was able, but though I appreciate all your help and advice, I must concentrate on taking care of his needs. It appears we are in for a BUMPY ride.

thanks again,
Patti
