I was thinking this plant looks a lot like a cultivar I have called "Little Warty" and then I stumbled across this image which seems to confirm that ID. Of course the photo above is fine in the generic Gasteria bin, but if you lost the name tag or something (happens to the best of us Smiling ) then maybe this would help.

Thanks so much Baja, I had forgotten the name and it is a more current photo of Gasteria 'Little Warty'.

If I'm remembering correctly, in the beginning of garden.org, or possibly when we were still called All Things Plants, it was okay to upload photos to the general entry for the particular genera, as well as the cultivar entry but if that rule has changed, the photo can be deleted from the main Gasteria entry since it is indeed Gasteria 'Little Warty'.

Ok, I'll leave it for now but it's okay to get rid of it if necessary. Smiling

I get confused with "General" database entries and "Parent Plant" entries so if anyone ever finds a photo of mine in an incorrect location, they have my permission to move it to where it belongs or have it deleted. Green Grin! Thumbs up

I was thinking to myself, "hey, that's little warty!" But, as usual, Baja beat me to it. Angel

Parent plant is the formal name for genus-only entry in database. A good place to put a pic when one knows the genus but not the species. There's no requirement to be more specific than that. I love these entries for when I take pics of multiple species/cultivars within a genus. A pic placed in one of those entries can still have a date and location attached, and other comments, unlike a multi-plant pic.

There's actually a difference between parent-plant entries and generic entries. The parent-plant entry includes information that's automatically included in every entry for plants of that genus. The generic entry does not have this feature.

TY, Zuzu. Could you or someone please post an example of a generic? It looks like I don't know what a generic entry is here.

Generic entry for Gasteria.

Gasteria

Parent entry for Aloe.

Aloes (Aloe)

The most obvious difference comes up when you try to edit the data of a parent entry, and you see this warning in red.

TYVM! I see the difference, and that there is text above the box with the list of actions that says parent plant. I have probably clicked on a generic entry before but did not notice the difference.

As a point of potential improvement, would it not be more accurate to phrase the top line on the parent page differently?

This database entry exists to show plant data and photos that apply generically to all Aloes.

The plant data may apply generically to all aloes, but each photo (by definition) is only of one plant, or a small group at most. Wouldn't it be better to restate the data applies generically to all Aloes and the photos may be of any Aloe? Maybe that's hair splitting but it seems more accurate to me.

This database entry exists to show plant data that applies generically to all Aloes, and photos of any Aloe.

I think it's an awesome suggestion, a much more correct reflection of the purpose of the entry.
