Hi all. I'm looking for this iris and can't seem to find it for sale anywhere, except for Roots & Rhizomes, which gets such terrible reviews that I'm scared to order from them.

Does anyone grow this iris? It's the most intense cobalt blue that I've seen and I'm wanting it for my blue iris bed. I'm curious what you think about it, if you do grow it.

If anyone knows where to get this iris, I would be over the moon!

We have a thread for hard to find irises:

The thread "Wanted: these hard to find irises" in Irises forum

You can have 'Jaybird' added to the list and if anyone finds it, they will let you know.

I have not had good luck with roots and rhizomes getting accurate cultivars, also very small and dried out. I haven't ordered from them in years though I doubt if they have gotten better.

Don't know anything about the supplier, but maybe someone else does?

Tom, that is apparently their reputation, so they're out for me. Lilli, thank you so much for finding the link; unfortunately they are out! Maybe Jaybird just isn't a great increaser and that's why it's so rare. A nursery near me, which is where I saw it, has said they're building up stock for at least a couple of years. I just remember walking through the rows of irises later in the Siberian season and seeing this iris that waaay bluer than the rest - a piercing cobalt blue that stopped me in my tracks. It was building up stock then, and still building up stock now! I'm designing a blue and iris-themed corner garden bed for our home and find myself lusting for this iris.

I hope you manage to get it eventually! Crossing Fingers!

If anyone else is curious about how Jaybird looks there are several (very different) images on AIS:

Lilli, I would say that the first and last images are accurate, as I remember. The middle images are inaccurate - there is no purple or violet tinge to the flower at all. I see that Jaybird has one child plant in the database, Riverdance (Schafer & Sacks), which also looks very blue. If I cannot find Jaybird, I might settle for this!

They're not offering Jaybird, but the guys who own Ensata Gardens may be able to help you locate that variety- they're very well connected with other growers of Sibs. They also have a good selection of intense blue varieties. The divisions they sell are great too.

Tienito, if you cannot find 'Jaybird', let me know and I can add it to the "Wanted" thread so others can be on the lookout.

Scott, could you add it to the thread for me? I can't find this iris anywhere. A couple of cold emails went unanswered. I see that Jaybird won an Award of Merit in 1986, so it must be a quality plant. Let's hope we can find this!

Tienito, I've added 'Jaybird' to the list on the "Wanted..." thread. Hopefully someone can find it for you! Crossing Fingers!

Our local club meets tomorrow. One member who regularly attends has a large SIB collection, so if I see her, I will ask if she has 'Jaybird'.

Edit: Our club meets next Sunday, not tomorrow.
