Hello,
My daughter and I are planning a trip out to Oregon this year. If you have been could you please post what you liked the best and what not to miss.

I know they have the iris fields, I also found that one peony farm is located fairly close. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

This is a bucket list trip and I want it to be awesome Rolling my eyes.

Take a look at Brad's thread "A record year" and you will see all of the Oregon places to choose from. I think Mid-America also has peonies.

Lilli, this is something I have thought about for years. My daughter now lives in Salt Lake City and has been wanting to visit Portland, OR so I am jumping at the chance to fly out and meet her and see the blooms.

Tom, what should I search to find that thread?

Teresa - A Record Year is a pretty active thread so you should be able to find it quickly if you scroll down the iris forum thread list.

How long will you be out there? Portland is a lovely city! If you have time between iris trips please head out to the pacific coast for a day. It is a pretty trip along 26 out of Portland to coastal highway 101 (go toward Cannon Beach and then south). The coast is gorgeous. If you want to stay closer to Portland at least take a drive along the Columbia Gorge, which is also spectacular. I would suggest Crater Lake as well, but that is a bit far if you plan to stay right in the Portland area.

Just along the Columbia, on the Washington side, you will reach Washougal which is where Mt. Pleasant Iris Farms is located. They have Japanese Iris show gardens. If you are there late enough in the bearded iris season, then the JI's should be in full bloom.

Iris Sisters, Keith Keppel and Mid-America are all in Salem, south of Portland. They are all close to each other, but you may want to stay the night down there in case you get carried away with all those amazing iris! Schreiner's is there too, close to Mid-America and they have nice viewing gardens. Adelman's is just up the road from Mid-America. Me? I would have to stay a couple of nights!

This sounds like a dream trip, Teresa! Perhaps contacting the growers to see when they predict the optimum time, bloom-wise, for a visit?

Teresa, two years ago, my friend and I drove up from Medford Oregon, it was about a 4 hour drive to get to Salem. Iris sisters and Keith Keppel are just about across the street from each other. From memory, Adelman's s is about 5 to 8 minute drive from Mid America. Schreiner's is probably within 10 minutes to the other nursery's also. At Adelman's they have free maps of numerous other nursery's and gardens there. My best advice for you is to bring your camera with extra memory cards and good walking shoes. When I was there is was raining or misting all day long, so it was very muddy, but it was so beautiful. There is so much to see I would plan at least 2 days there. I need to see if my friend wants to take another trip… Whistling

My limited advice:

Visit all the iris gardens in Oregon
Travel the coast on your way home.

Sempervivums and sempervivum nurseries are all over Oregon, and particularly around the Salem area. Go post on the Sempervivum forum to get their input if you're interested in Semps.

Oh, wow! Thanks for posting, I am getting so excited! I do plan on calling to see when peak season might be so I can get my plane ticket early. Semps, iris, peonies and more!

I need to mapquest how far the coast is from Portland.

..... Portland is approximately 85+ miles from the coastal cities of Gearhart, Cannon Beach, and Seaside -- just a leisurely trip west on HWY 26 from PDX. And then there are other small towns up and down US 101 within a half hour/hour drive either north or south of where 26 meets up with 101. Beautiful scenery along the HWY 26 way, and a number of touristy cafes/restaurants/stopovers along the route. Im a resident Oregonian and ive made the trip countless times Smiling You'll enjoy it very much, im sure!! :)

I have never been to Portland, or any of the iris farms, but I did travel from Brookings to Astoria along the coast and back. Tim is right, there are so many interesting small towns in Oregon. I would like to visit inland Oregon some time. Oregon has a special place in my heart. Lovey dubby

Inland Oregon is very desert like. Interesting geology, with lots of the hills being ancient volcanic cinder cones. When I was in grad school, Washington State had a license to allow us to go mine obsidian from Glass Mountain. We used the stone in flintknapping, so we could learn to make stone artifacts and replicate different older forms that were found in the archaeological sites we were working on. Having grown up on the Great Lakes, I was more drawn to the Oregon Coast, but spent lots of time in the Columbia river basin due to my coursework.

Hi Teresa.. I think the other guys covered a lot of it but the Salem area is like the Landscape Capitol of the world there are Nurseries everywhere to stop and visit.. Schreiner's and Mid America for Iris are open to the public anytime during bloom season you could easily spend a day at either of them.. the other nurseries not sure about open to public would email them.. The same with Peonies my favorite is Adelman's they have a really nice display garden and acres of them blooming Brooks is fun as well very neat conifer collection Smiling You will have fun there .. There bloom season for Iris seems to change a little every year last year peak bloom was May 27th -30th .. 2016 was 15th to 18th.. 2015 was 9th to 12th so it can vary depending on weather. It would be best to to hold off as long as you can on buying tickets if you want to hit it at prime..

Thank you, Brad. I was wondering about buying rhizomes and maybe peony roots. Are their plants in pots? I am guessing I should just continue with a order now instead of waiting.

You can get great deals on Peonies at Adelmans they have clumps of potted peonies or singles.. I don't remember seeing them at Brooks but didn't visit last year.. Schreiners sells limited pots of iris so you may find something your looking for there. Mid America has a huge selection of Hosta's in pots that you won't find anywhere else but no Iris.

Ok, next problem, how can I get my items home? I guess instead of bring them back in a suitcase I could just ship them back thru Priority.

Thanks for the info Brad. Oh yah hosta la vista baby lol.
