Ok you folks that have Microsoft 10, I just got a new PC and need to know what you use for all your pics. I was spoiled with Photo Gallery where I could tag my orchid photos, and they were easy to find...10 doesn't have that option. Confused

I hate that they change the photo storage options each time you upgrade. It seems every time I get things organized they change the system. Let's hope someone has a better idea. Crossing Fingers!

Carol, I use Apple so I'm not sure...but can't you just change the photo file name from the assigned numerical one to your plant name? If I click on my photo, at the very top is the image info and if I click on that , I can put in whatever I want.

I have always had Apple computers or tablets.( except for a very first PC, I swore then I would never buy a PC ever again) But, I had a very simple system on my Macbook Pro - I used to keep monthly folders for all categories, pictures were/are easy to find that way.
I still don't get it why people have to fight with those PC Operating Systems. IPads are a piece of cake to use. They are super portable, have wonderful cameras nowadays and are totally user friendly all around.
That is my better idea.... Smiling

I guess it is just how one uses their computer or what one gets used to??? One of my son's is the CIO for his company and buys hundreds of computers each year. Many times he tried to switch various departments over to Apples and he always winds up going back to PC's. I have noticed however that the business uses I Phones. Go figure.

I was going through some old photos and came across a picture of our first computer, an Apple II it must have been around the late 70's. I also remember an Apple E and an Apple 2C back in those days. I am not sure when we went over to the dark (PC) side. LOL

In the beginning we always had Macs at work, so I was used to them, but the husband's group used PCs. For some reason our first home computer was a Gateway PC. In those days, just prior to updates you could have sworn your PC got miraculously hit by a virus, and after taking care of that the new operating system didn't work so well with the old stuff. Then that expensive PC tower couldn't be started up if the temperature in the room was above 75 degr F. Glare Little did I know then that the culprit was a small cooling fan which had broken. I had enough, switched over to Apple devices at home and never looked back.

I've had the same experience a couple of times, Carol. My geeks (husband and son) would just upgrade, willy nilly and I would then tear my hair for weeks trying to find things. This last couple of upgrades, they warned me ahead of time, so I could show them where I had all my pictures and documents saved.

So this time, my "Pictures" file in the File Explorer remained intact after the upgrade. I still save everything to that file, and then Google automatically backs them up to Google Photos as well so I can share pictures with the family in a shared album.

This is so sad.
It's almost better to print a photo and make an old fashioned scrap book.. that you can hand write notes on.

I have not had the problem with those usual pesky updates, just when I upgrade from something like Win 8 to 10; that sort of change. You can bring the photos but the new way to file is always different.

That's for sure! I just came from 7 to 10, and an all in one computer. I'm completely stressed out! The worst is the photos though. All my orchids were in Photo gallery where I could look by date or tags. It really helped when that orchid lost it's tag or hadn't bloomed for the season. I could just look it up under The name I thought it was to make sure. Can't do that now, and going through folders by date will take forever, and not help with ID.

Carol, regarding your Orchid pictures, can you use our forum and even better, our data base to look them up?

Some of them, but my photos go back to DG days and longer, and there are many that didn't get into the Data Base for whatever reason like noids, and of course the name changes don't help. I do have a book that I keep up, but no pictures in it. I'm certain I have some on discs, but I wouldn't get the tags on those either. Just looking for a good program to download before the problem gets worse.

If there's an IT person or geek/nerd you know who can help, it looks like you may be able to install Photo Gallery on Windows 10 after all:

https://windowsreport.com/wind...

I'd be hesitant to try following that guide yourself, though; I haven't had a chance to test it out to see if it works on my Windows 10 system yet.

Carol,
on one of my other orchid sites many people use Excell spreadsheets.
Here's a post so maybe you can see...it's all greek to me.

"
Created an orchid spreadsheet in excel. Even figured out how to add pictures to a comment box, so the pictures pop up whenever the curser is hooverd over the name"

There's also a wonderful App. that I use on my phone but is also made for PC. it's called
"Orchid Album".

AhHa, thanks Joshua, my geek/nerd will be visiting next weekend, I will ask about that windowsreport installation.

Lindsey, the Orchid Album is $30 but it looks like it would help in my case as I have so few orchids it would not be difficult or time consuming to enter them all.

here's another one that I have heard about.
