This is my favorite garden feature in my parent's yard. It is a grotto that my dad made with stones that he got tractor bucket load by tractor bucket load from my stash of stacking stone. He used a reinforcing beam/board across the opening and then stacked more stone on top of it. He ordered the Virgin Mary statue from an online supplier and planted the daffodils. My mom can sit at the kitchen table windows and see the grotto and all the birds that come to the feeder that is close by. Nice.

I agree On one of the last trips to the Rawlings Conservatory in Baltimore with my FIL/MIL, we stopped at http://www.nsgrotto.org/ "The National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, a Catholic national shrine devoted to Our Blessed Mother Mary, is a place of worship, pilgrimage, evangelization and reconciliation." Living this close I don't think Henry had ever stopped. He was able to take his time to walk up. He seemed to be moved and contemplative after his visit. It was a beautiful day.

Finally, spring appears to have arrived and many of our woodland plants are beginning to bloom.
Our earliest Trilliums:
Trillium grandiflorum
Thumb of 2018-04-25/greenthumb99/52e99a
Trillium luteum
Thumb of 2018-04-25/greenthumb99/f70f1b
Trillium sessile

Our later blooming species are showier, but these early risers are our proclaimers of winter's demise/

Great array of early bloom! My only bloomers so far are not native: bleeding hearts, a corydalis, Epimedium

Beautiful GT, nothing beats woodland blooms. Do you have Indian Pipes? Haven't seen those in a very long time.

Holly, your hellebores sure put on an amazing show. We have had Indian Pipes other years, but have not seen any so far this year. Seems like they pop up later.

David your woodlands are gorgeous as usual. Aren't Indian pipes a host for a type of swallowtail? I'm not remembering just now. Confused
