I am new to gardening for butterflies. This caterpillar made its home on my bronze fennel and brought a lot of his/her friends. My question : what kind or butterfly will this be?

Especially on Fennel - a favorite food for Monarch catapillars.

Thanks everyone for the id...:thankyou: I have seen swallowtails and a smaller butterfly with orange and brown coloring...I was not able to get a pic of it but it was beautiful! I have planted 2 kinds of milkweed because I would love to see monarchs on a regular basis. I have seen one here. I'm sad to say it did not last..., my pup got it before I could stop her. We had a long talk about leaving them alone.

Congrats on a successful butterfly garden! You may need more "food" for these caterpillars. If so, please beware that some plants for sale are treated with systemic pesticides that you would not want to feed butterfly caterpillars.
The golden rule: Do to others only that which you would have done to you.

The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The 2nd best time is now. (-Unknown)

Any idea what kind of caterpillar this is? I'm wondering if it's a hawk moth because of the size. This is norther Nevada and this pic was just a few weeks ago. I've been trying to identify it online but I can't find something similar. Pic with my kid for size reference. My son is nearly 4.
