I grow it in containers with Pentas! They draw in numerous butterflies.

16" round ceramic containers. About 20 inches deep.
The butterfly weeds, three plants, are in the center and they get staked individually.
One container has cranberry red Pentas, the second one white and the third one cranberry. I see several Monarchs visit, Painted Ladies, and a few species of "skippers". The three Pentas are planted like a 12 o'clock, 4 and 8. The 4 and 8 face the yard.

I use Miracle Grow potting soil and then plant the plants. Miracle grow has pretty good water retention.
I water as often as weather dictates. I never let them dry out, evenly moist is good but not sopping wet.
A couple of weeks after planting I feed with Dynamite slow realease fertilizer, 18-18-18, one healthy teaspoon around the base of each penta. Then a tbsp. sprinkled at the base of the butterfly weeds. That fertilizer lasts for the entire growing season.
Make sure container has a drainage hole.
