Does anyone recognize that unusual root structure? I've picked up seeds from under palms in several places in FL (Z9 areas,) at various times, and had no idea what any of the mama trees were at the time anyway. These seeds sprouted about 2 yrs ago.

TIA!

They remind me of Serenoa repens seedlings; always sprouting up everywhere, sometimes even in container plants!

edited to say: Though, there may be numerous possibilities, S. repens is just the one I've seen a lot of over the years. Smiling

TYVM! They DO! Seeds from that could have been in the soil or moved/dropped by critters, and I don't think I would have picked up seeds from that unless some get much taller than shrub size. Those grow in this area, Z8.

You are very Welcome! I'm far from a Palm expert but I've seen so many S. repens seedlings here in Fla. zone 9a and 9b over the years and it's the first one that came to mind.

I bet you have! I'm so close to where palm trees are common, but just far enough into cold winters that they are rare. The quest to sprout some seeds from "real" FL palm trees continues!

Yes, as unruly looking shrubs. Like a palm tree fell into the ground & a few twisted leaves were left sticking up.

Yep, that's the description of Saw Palmetto's! We've had issues here in Florida for quite a few years now where groups of people trespass onto private property and steal the fruit to sell. If they see you in your yard, they ask if they can take the fruit but in our old neighborhood we found them slowly driving by, watching homes and if they thought no one was home, they would pull into the driveway and walk all over the property, taking berries. My sister had to call the police last year when she saw a car in her neighbors driveway and knew the neighbors were out of town because they watch the house for them. The car had pulled into the driveway and parked. My brother in law walked over and there was a lady with young children in the car while a man was hacking away at the saw palmettos, throwing the stalks with fruit into the trunk. My brother in law told the man that they needed to leave the premises and the guy said that he had permission from the homeowners to take the berries ... when they were told the police had been called, they took off very quickly!

When we bought our home in Sebastian, we rented it out for a year before moving down there and a few months after we moved in, we were doing some landscaping in the front yard when a car stopped out front. A guy got out with a machete and asked my husband if they could take berries, saying that we allowed them to do it the year before! We knew that our tenants had not allowed it so we told them absolutely not, that they were trespassing and they went on their way. The neighborhood is a private, gated community but that means nothing ... landscapers have been known to give the gate codes out to others! The codes are changed by management every so often but it doesn't mean a thing because people have to give the code to their landscaping companies or delivery people, friends, etc. Neighbors are now always on the alert during the time of year when fruit is present on the palms trees. There are a couple of law enforcement officers who live in the neighborhood and they keep watch too but it still happens.

That's amazing! What is the motivation for this?

The only seeds I've gathered were on the ground, from a sidewalk adjacent to a busy public street, and from the ground around our campsite(s). None were near any saw p's, that I noticed. I don't really want any of those, I promised DH I wouldn't put anything prickly or poky in the landscape. I will probably compost these seedlings unless someone wants them as a trade soon.

They illegally harvest and sell the fruit; the extract is used for medicinal purposes. A couple of years ago I heard (don't know if it's true or not) that some corporations were paying big bucks for the berries. It's very sad because the Saw Palmetto fruit is a staple in the diet of the black bears here in the state.

I've never walked up to a mature specimen and touched it but descriptions of S. repens always mention the serrations on the leaf edges, and I've been under the impression that the common name "saw palmetto" comes from the sharp edges, like a saw blade. I was touching the seedlings yesterday trying to feel the serrations but there are none. Are these seedlings too young to exhibit this trait?

Tiffany, S. repens will not have the serrations on the leaf edge, but on the leaf stem. The serrations will not be noticed for quite a few years when your seedling starts showing the mature type leaf. The root structure you show in your photo of the seedlings are a trait for all sabal palms also.

Do you recall the shape of the seed? Oblong round for S. repens and black round flat on ends for Sabal.

Hey that's cool, TYVM, Scott! I am sorry, I do not remember a thing about the seeds or the mama trees, just that I hoped the seeds were ripe since they were on the ground. I will continue to cultivate until these things are ID'd. Someday a mature leaf will show up... :+)

Can I just say how I appreciate the fact that you collect seeds from random things? I do that too.

One time a veterinarian's office had a giant coleus out front and it had gone to seed so I collected seeds from it as well as a cutting. Then I saw a nurse standing there looking at me like I was crazy (I am). lol

I do collect seeds if an opportunity presents w/o trespassing. To anyone who has planted a palm close enough to a sidewalk or parking lot that fallen seeds can be collected, thank you!

I should probably worry about trespassing. I look identical to Sasquatch so it's open season all year.
