Caroline, I am new to coleus and have snapped the seed pods off. I always start a cutting because they are so easy. I have some Sedona in water now with tiny roots. Seeds would make a bunch more plants ![]() Teresa Bee Kind, make the world a better place. |

I am a slacker never tried to collect seed .. but I think the mesh baggie would work |

Does anyone know if that "Under the Sea" series is available as seeds. The plants and plugs are at Hort Couture. They were developed here in Canada, but don't seem to be around as plants or seeds? |
I haven't seen any .. they are nice though |

Rosie dawn seems to have under the sea plants. They aren't cheap but they are a nice size. http://www.rosydawngardens.com... Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. |

Teresa I've never sent cuttings before but would be willing to try if you want some for postage. I remember being in a co-op years ago and the tiny cuttings would come in a small baggie in a bubble envelope. Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. |
Shipping cuttings .. pretty easy .. damp paper towel.. sometimes I put water gels in the bottom.. leave the tops exposed.. put a baggie around the bottom.. or I have gotten small cuttings.. just fully wrapped in a damp paper towel in a baggie.. all depends on the size.. NC farms just baggies them .. overnight shipping though.. would suggest when the weather is less extreme.. too hot or too cold.. less of a chance to survive |

Last year I saved seeds from my Campfire coleus to see what I would get. (Hybrid?) I clipped the flower heads off and let dry on a labeled paper plate in the garage (After they dried I shook the shiny black seeds out and packaged them away). As a control, I took a vegetative cutting. As you can see, the Campfire from the cutting (lower right) doesn't look anything like the seeds I took from the same plant. Conclusion? Hybrid. If you don't really care what you get, it was fun - they're all pretty. However, I don't know if they are sun tolerant, how tall, etc... - another experiment. My guess is these new varieties of coleus are mostly hybrids and are only propagated by vegetative cuttings. They may seed - but it might be a surprise what you get! ![]() |
Nice surprises ![]() |

If you want new and fancy, grow two fancy coleus side by side, harvest the seeds, and grow them. You'll get lots of new and pretty colored coleus stores don't sell! |
Guess I pinch too much.. never has enough time to produce seeds before the cold snap .. actually letting them go this year of they set flowers.. will see |
