Welcome to the Porch Swing!

Everyone is welcome to join us on the Porch Swing a thread where we talk about cooking, books, pets, birthdays, TV, the area where we live, anything that won't fit into the regular daylily forum. The subject is always changing.

Don't worry about reading all of the thread, just jump right in. We're sure you'll enjoy visiting with us.

We have many threads covering a wide variety of information on the topic of Daylilies. The Daylily Forum has two threads for off topic discussion - Weather In Your Garden for weather related chat and The Porch Swing for all non-daylily messages and chat.

When a new Porch Swing thread is posted, the old Porch Swing threads will be left up for a few days, then periodically deleted, so be sure to copy any items out of the old thread that you want to keep when you see a new thread is up.

* All other off topic threads will be relocated to the appropriate Forum. If you inadvertently post an off topic thread to the forum, please let us know and we'll move it into its proper place, and if we see it before you do, we'll let you know by Tree-mail that we moved it.*

@flaflwrgrl About the HCTZ, DH takes it for his blood pressure. I don't take anything and don't have high blood pressure (except when I'm at the Dr. office). Both of us get up at night, however. Of course he gets up and is back asleep by the time his head hits the pillow. I usually get up twice at night, the last time about 4:00 a.m. and many times I never get back to sleep. It seems that whether I drink a lot or not, I'm still up. Wish I had a switch to turn off my mind at night! Grumbling
Any day you wake up on the sunny side of the grass is a good day.

Even though it looks like winter outdoors, I can enjoy the bloom on a double hibiscus indoors.

Gorgeous Valerie!

Well, it turns out my fears of being put on a bp med were all for naught. Doc didn't put me on anything, well, except for a baby aspirin, 1 per day, which he put me on last month. I had a brain stem TIA several months ago but not to worry folks, I lived and I did have a brain MRI & no lasting damage appears sooooooo.........
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others.

Lisinopril is one of two bp meds that I take. I have been given most of the statins out there and they all seem to affect my muscles. I am taking a low dose of the crestor generic rosuvastatin. I read that statins are one of the worst drug you can take. I have been reading up on some of the natural stuff that can lower your LDL.
I have been taking a baby aspirin since my TP almost fifteen years ago.

Had appointment with cardiologist on monday following chest pains, put me on an angina drugs regime including atorvastatin like Ann's husband and on list for angiogram, NOT looking forwards to that.

But worried about the statin though as pharmasist says if it causes muscle pains stop it and see your gp but I have muscle pains all the time already so how will I know if it is causing a problem? Hoping that it turns out to be something else in the end.

But at least the snow has gone for now.

@touchofsky love your hibiscus Valerie.

I know what you mean Nikki about the statin & muscle pains. I worry too b/c my dh has muscle pain pretty much constantly.
I don't like statins. Too many people I know (or people they know) have had weird side effects from them.
Mike, check out Niacin --- it HAS to be the flushing kind though. Like this kind:

@Hazelcrestmikeb
I read too that 8 walnuts per day helps take down the cholesterol. Walnuts & almonds -- all nuts but those 2 seem the most potent for lowering cholesterol. Fatty fish such as salmon. Avocados.
On the niacin thing..... remember Jan in WI? I recall she was on the flushing kind of niacin for her cholesterol; prescribed by her doc but I can't recall what dose she was on. I have read not to take too high a dose w/o your doctor's knowledge.
My best friend is on bp med & statin. This is what she said:
I started on 10mgSimvastatin 5 months ago kicking a screaming, but my cholesterol went from 210 to 150. Also started on 12.5 HCL for blood pressure and that's down 10 points. What can I say. Better living through chemistry.
She's always joking about better living through chemistry. A reference to when we were all young. She's a hoot. She also takes 100 mg potassium and 100 mg of CoQ10 with those drugs.
I talked to the doc about niacin for the cholesterol for my dh but doc wouldn't hear of it. Actually, he acted like he'd never heard of it at all. I so worry b/c my dh seems to get whatever side effects any drug has. I used to think it was psychosomatic & I stopped telling him what the side effects were for anything. Not knowing didn't stop him from getting the side effects so there went that theory of mine.
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others.
