I recently got my first air plant and noticed that there is some black gunk around the base of the leaves. It lives in an office and gets fluorescent lighting, I water it once a week by submerging it in tap water and letting it dry out completely on a paper towel. The container it's in gets plenty of air circulation.

I'm not sure if this black gunk is mold/rot, bugs, or fungus - does anybody know what this is? (Photos attached) Can Svlad the Tillandsia be saved?!

Welcome!

It looks like Mildew. Your air plant, from the part I can see, doesn't look very healthy.

Thanks Daisy - yeah he's not healthy at all. It used to be bright green and now it's all pale and wrinkly. Crying

Other than trying to let it dry out, do you have any suggestions about getting rid of the mildew? Is it doomed?

I'm not an expert on these but It may be too late. If you have some fungacide spray, you could try that. I don't think it is getting enough water.
