Hi Jo,

Can you tell us a bit more about your computer setup? Are you using Mac or Windows and which version are you using?

Moved to the Photography forum to hopefully get some additional input.

Are you looking for a program that does both - importing images from your camera/SD card and edits, or would you be happy with a separate program for each?

There are a number of free and paid options around.

Irfanview's strength is in its ability to open many different formats, resize and save (also in many different formats).

Paint.NET is another free program that gives you some additional editing features beyond the basic "Paint" included with Windows.

GIMP is also freeware but more complicated and has a steeper learning curve.

At the other end of the spectrum is paid software like Adobe Lightroom, which can import, manage and edit photos. Often used for "developing" images captured in RAW format.

Joshua: Thanks for the editing hints. I almost downloaded GIMP, glad I didn't.
I am calling in my Geek. She understands the new terminology.
Thanks to everyone who replied.

I teach photography and tell all my students not to use any software to transfer images from their card to their computer. Those softwares are notorious for missing pix, creating duplicates, putting pix in more than one place = confusion from the get go. Do it manually yourself. Put your card into your card reader, plug that into your computer and do a cut or copy and paste. I have a separate folder on my desk top labeled: New Pix. No doubt where I put them. Gene

Actually, that was a problem I had with picasa.

When I use irfanview to edit, I grab the picture from the camera card, edit, resize, optimize for the web, and then save to the specific folder that I will be moving to a thumb drive and eventually use in my blog.

I leave all the pics on the camera card, saving to the computer only those pictures that are worth posting online.

I've never been able to figure out gimp...

I do have a freeware version of paint shop pro, but... Prefer irfanview.

OH boy. Memory cards were never meant for pix storage. Thumb drives neither. There should not be any pix on your card unless you are shooting and just haven't been home yet. What if your camera gets stolen? The Gimp is powerful but hard enough to work with that it is not worth the effort, IMO. I also use Irfanview for standard things. XnView if I need more power. Paint shop is not really meant for photography, IMO. I pass. Gene

Maybe I'm more picky than you.

Those full memory cards get consigned to a junk drawer and never looked at again.

The good pics get posted to my blog, so... You could say that I use the blog for storage....

The google search bar on the blog helps me find specific pictures....

Good luck finding specific pics from whenever in the computer... No matter how well I label the folders....

Thumbs up for Irfanview from me as well, I've never needed anything else.
