I planted two hollies last summer - they did pretty well through the summer and fall, then around winter time all the leaves fell and now its bare. Are they dead? Live in NJ - the hollies we about 2-3 feet when they were planted.

Do you know what kind of Holly? If not, do a scratch test. Scratch the bark with you finger nail. If the layer underneath the bark is green, it is alive. If the layer underneath is brown or you can't scratch because the bark is too hard, its dead.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost
