The 2 main German Semp sites note that they have 2 conflicting versions of Andrenor.

http://www.semperhorst.de/Dieh...

I'm thinking it's most likely that the ones shown by Trixie and Erwin are correct, which means the ones in our database are not ... Shrug!

I've taken a look, but who is Trixie, I don't see that name on any of the images in that link. I have this one on order from Youngs.

Thank you for the post Patty, lets see if we can track this one down. The description says: "Bright green leaves backed & tipped red."

B. Bodmeier is Trixi. A most lovely person. Sure wish I could meet her in person one day.

This is a semp from Great Britian. Nicholas Moore (GB). I see that all the photos from people in GB show the one we have in our database. Mine came from SMG some years ago.
http://sempervivum-liste.de/Se...

There are one or two in our database that look suspect. Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Andrenor')

From sempervivum-liste.de
"We have several clones under the same name in the dictionary here."

For what it's worth, the Japanese photos look like what we have here, so that gives more credence to ours being correct. (ours meaning SMG and Young's) I tip my hat to you.

Is there any way to verify who wrote that description?

Horsts' site shows SMG (aka Squaw Mtn) and the pic from Japan looking like ours. Trixie and Erwin both show something different than ours.

Moore is from GB so it would seem more likely that they have the correct one - maybe. I've had several incorrect semps from SMG... Whistling

Patty I doubt there is any way to verify, except if Fernwood has it in their list, then they'd probably have the right one. Usually I do say that I trust the German's most, but lately I have seen a few that are just a mess (Lennik's Glory as an example, Horst's site says something like - this one is a mess...) Anyway - I trust Horst, but like your example of 2 different looking semps, he just posts pictures of what people are sending him. Which in a way is good, I don't mind having a semp that at least a few other folks have...AND until we develop a semp society, there are always going to be potential problems - with no specific authority on what is correct!

I'm utterly amazed, in the absence of a cultivar registration authority for Sempervivum, with many thousands of cultivars, that there aren't way more cases of this ID dilemma.

Actually Mark, out of all the thousands of cultivars, most match up on both sides of the water. I think that is very good.
And the fact that we are actively working at clearing up problems as they pop up makes it even better.

@JungleShadows, Kevin do you have a description for this one?

Mark, I think you mean 'Aren't' way more cases of this ID...yes? I agree if that's what you meant! I think one reason that there haven't been more issues is that named semps are still somewhat uncommon. But as more people are beginning to get into them, it may easily become more of a problem! I tip my hat to you.

Lynn I liked your response because it is true - these plants are amazing to me in that they go through so many color changes but within a specific range, so even though they can look really different depending on conditions, if you grow one for several years, you can usually spot of it is the correct plant in someone else's photos. AND most of the time, they are correct! Even between here and Europe! Thumbs up

Frankly, I'm amazed that any of our ID's are correct.

My 'Andrenor' is from PO and looks pretty much like Lynn's. Abundant, longish narrow leaves.

I'm with you Tim - to think all semps in existence are still descended from their original mother Semp decades later! Seems like a small miracle that any of them are right! Blinking
