In this area we are going to talk about additions to the iris database.

First, I want to say, a lot of people have been doing a lot of work with fantastic results. Thank you!

We want to have the database as uniform as possible, but you will notice there are some variants in the different plant databases. But here, we're going to discuss what we want in the iris database. Hostas, for ex, might ask for something different.

This will be ongoing, and updated as we come across something. Any questions are welcome.

For starts:
1) Please use the printed out word inches rather than "
2) Put the zones by category, if you can, for ex: Tall Bearded Zone 3-9, rather than just filling in your zone.

Polly, given that the cultivar name is part of the basic DB plant name entry I don't see the need to fill out "Iris Name" under data entry. Duplication and more possibility of error.

I would tend to agree. That whole database was brought over from Cubits as is, otherwise I don't think we would have put the name in there twice. It would mean a restructuring of the data box, though. I think Dave might be getting a little tired of our requests. I guess I can broach it with him.

Maybe fall count or ploidy boxes would be a better use of his time? I'm constantly amazed at his patience.

Me, too. I don't want to push him over the edge. I'm sure he'll see this, and let us know if we're getting to be too much.

I'm getting in to this late. I'd like to add some Iris photos to the database. I find the information requests confusing -- I don't know what cultivars are, etc. All of my Irises are tall bearded, named varieties. I'd like to include photos, but didn't see where these would be added. Sorry for the kindergarten questions............

Mary Ann, first do a search to see if it already exists in the database, and then you can just add a photo (scroll down the page to beneath the entry). But if it doesn't already exist and you're adding it to the database, I just fill in with "Iris" until you hit the "cultivar" name -- that's the name of the iris. Then submit it, and then it has to be accepted by the Systems Administrator and you'll later get a Systems Message that it has been added, and then you can add your photos.

Also, if you hit "Watch" up in the left corner of a forum it will save it for you, and then anytime when you're in ATP all you have to do is click on the "All Things Plants" in the upper left corner and it will take you to your list of forums and there will be a red "Yes" by any that have new activity. And when you want to check a thread in a forum with a red "Yes" at the beginning, just click on the "Yes" and it will take you to the first unread message.

It's really very simple once you get the hang of it!

I seldom know what to input under Height in the Iris DB.
Is there a resource which defines Short, Average or Tall for the classification?

Why not just put the actual registered height of a particular iris? That information can be found for most irises from the Iris Encyclopedia: http://wiki.irises.org/bin/view.

It does have a place for the registered height, but I think knowing if they are shorter than normal or taller just by a glance for the newbies would be nice.

Let me see if I can come up with the proper figures, Ethan. Even though it's different in different soils, I think this is still an interesting part of the database.

Thanks Polly,
OT but I was at the local nursery yesterday evening and they had 'Caesar's Brother'. All from the same supplier, I asked. One was a very dark purple with modern flared standards and falls. All the others were the older form but in light blue, dark purple blue or a nice magenta purple. Wish I had my camera.

I really think Caesar's Brother is no more. And that's going to happen to more and more irises, but now that we can capture them on the computer when they are introduced it should help.

I saw plants labeled Ceasar's Brother at a nursery today. I didn't have my camera but the blooms were a very narrow dark purple violet. The spent blooms were forming lots of seed pods and it looked like it had two blooms per stem.

This is proving to be harder than I thought.

Average height for tall bearded is considered 36". But the rest of them, I'm just finding the range. I'll keep looking, but at least we know the TB which is the majority.

Thanks Cece, you probably just grow them really well Smiling I found that figure on the American Iris Society website. I'm having trouble finding other averages.
