I made it through the winter and only lost 1 rosette to the weather this winter, and with an ice storm covering the hypertufa with heavy ice for 2 days. Last year I changed substrates to 3/4 inorganic (Pumice, turface, and grit) and 1/4 organic (MG). The mixture was too lean for most semps in my area except for Oddity. I had issues with Oddity, moved it to a more shaded area and it's thriving. Sempervivum for Sale |
Mine has always been grown in full sun. For some years it was in compost from our local farm store, in recent years it has been in sandy loam. In compost with chicken grit mulch: In sandy loam with chicken grit mulch: |

When I had my 'Oddity' in a container in full sun it turned quite red.![]() Now that it's in the ground with only morning sun it looks normal. ![]() These are old pictures. I wish there were fewer quilled varieties, but that's the great thing about gardening, one can focus on the plants one likes and avoid those not liked. Sorry Greg I can't, I don't like quilled or monstrose varieties, and will never grow them. I'm attracted to symmetry, which is famously displayed in many semp varieties. Some people like odd and aberrant forms, that's fine, it's just not for me personally.
